Any Burners from Vancouver?...just got back from 2003!!...wow!
Vancouver is alive and well!
Hi. I'm one of the Burning Man Reps for Vancouver.
There are probably more than 400 Burners in the Vancouver/Victoria region.
We hold several major events each year.
To stay connected, there is
a Vancouver Burner website
http://escape.to/burningman
an email announcement list (low traffic, announcing events)
[email protected]
and an email discussion list (casual, freewheeling discussion)
[email protected]
Glad you enjoyed your first time, and I hope to see you out at some of our gatherings.

Hey all! I'm an east Van boy, and '03 was my first burn. Funfunfun! I'm on an extended post-BRC roadtrip to Mexico now, and won't be back until Jan/Feb of next year, but would love to meet up with some hometown burners then. I just thought I'd say hello now and get in touch when I get home.

I want to second that wreck beach idea. Living in grad residence on the UBC campus made it all too easy to spend big chunks of my summer down there, but it's impossible to not love the atmosphere down there. It'd make a great venue. But maybe during the rainy winter season...? It'd be more in the spirit of vancouver, have the adverse conditions thing that we'd have to design and plan for, and we'd have the place to ourselves...

CAUTION! Thread drift!
My fiance, my girlfriend, and I are transfering to UBC at the start of the next academic year from two schools in Portland, OR and would like to be introduced to the city by fellow Burners. Amongst us are myself, who considers Vancouver a second home, my fiance, who has never been to Canada but is scared shitless by the United States government, (as am I, frankly...), and our girlfriend, who spent much of her life growing up in Gary, Indiana, and is looking forward to living in a city in which she does not have to get used to falling asleep to the sound of gunfire, as she did in Gary.
Any advice, help w/immigration, information about the Greater Vancouver area, and general knowledge that would be of interest to Burners would be appreciated, if anyone is willing to share...?

can't really help you out with immigration questions (although maybe i should learn since i've had quite a few americans ask me about this in the past year). i also go to ubc, but i'm hardly ever out on campus because i do research at a hospital in the middle of the city. most of the burner/artist types live on the east side because of cheaper rents/less yuppies/cooler stuff to do. the problem is that UBC is way out as far west as you can get so the commute could be a problem. every UBC student gets a subsidized bus pass though, so if you lived close to a major bus route (ie the #99 on Broadway) you could get there in 25-30 minutes. driving is also an option but parking on campus is $$$. as jody mentioned there's a lot of burners in town, and generally the city attracts a lot of the more freakier people from across canada (sort of like SF for americans).
if you have any more specific questions i'd be happy to answer them.

I can't wait to get to UBC, especially now that you've said there's a free bus pass involved! (My fiance and I are epileptic, so we depend on the busses whereever we live...).electrolux wrote:can't really help you out with immigration questions (although maybe i should learn since i've had quite a few americans ask me about this in the past year). i also go to ubc, but i'm hardly ever out on campus because i do research at a hospital in the middle of the city. most of the burner/artist types live on the east side because of cheaper rents/less yuppies/cooler stuff to do. the problem is that UBC is way out as far west as you can get so the commute could be a problem. every UBC student gets a subsidized bus pass though, so if you lived close to a major bus route (ie the #99 on Broadway) you could get there in 25-30 minutes. driving is also an option but parking on campus is $$$. as jody mentioned there's a lot of burners in town, and generally the city attracts a lot of the more freakier people from across canada (sort of like SF for americans).

As for why you've heard from so many of your American friends asking about immigration to Canada? Well, we're scared! Terrified, actually! Our government is being run by an evil maniac!
