Lakes of Fire'14 - Montague, MI June 19-22, 2014

Postby Lakes of Fire » Sat Dec 21, 2013 6:24 am

It’s cold out there, Great Lakes burners!

That must mean it’s time to start thinking about Lakes of Fire 2014!

Your friendly Great Lakes-area organizers have been doing just that. And we’ve got some important updates, information, and call-outs for you hibernating beasts. So let’s plunge in like polar bears in the equinox sun.

(Enter on Winston Road)
Montague, MI 49437

Contact Groot at board AT with the subject: “Beancounter."

G.L.E.A. – a Michigan-based charitable social organization that promotes the general welfare by producing Lakes of Fire – welcomes a new incoming President of the Board of Directors: “Dirtball Dan” Trevisan. Based in Ann Arbor, Dirtball has been with Lakes of Fire since it first year. Much gratitude goes to Dan for stepping up for the event, and to the outgoing Board President Cynthia “Cooky” Jones, whose exemplary service turned awesome into amazing.

In other fantastical news, this year’s Art Grants budget was recently upped ... by double. 200%. That’s twofold. The Art Grant form isn’t all the way live yet, but start salivating those creative juices, because G.L.E.A.’s giving away $10,000 in Art Grants in 2014!

Check it out!

That’s all we’ve got for you before the days grow longer, and hopefully, just a touch warmer.

Can’t wait to see you at Lakes of Fire 2014!

Hey hey hey and ho ho ho!

Happy Holidays, Great Lakes Burners!

More great news from G.L.E.A. Inc. and Lakes of Fire!

Check out the theme our LoF community chose - overwhelmingly; seriously, by a lot. And now’s the time to think about to submitting YOUR EFFIGY PLAN into 2014’s Effigy Design Competition.

Keep readin’ . . . .

Financials from 2013 can be found here!

Below the thunders of the upper deep;
Far far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
the Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides; above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous grot and secret cell
Unnumber'd and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the slumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages, and will lie
Battening upon huge seaworms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

- Lord Tennyson

In ancient mythology it’s a titanic power, pent up over the ages, waiting to be set free; a burst of mighty energy from a deep and secret place. Lord Tennyson describes a creature awoken by the fires of seaworms, a merging of the elements if you will. An awakening takes place, a bursting forth from places distant and unknown.

Legendary sea monsters of giant proportions chase us away from unknown depths, perhaps from another time. But even now, they sustain a strange allure. Tentacled beasts deep within the waters; they stay with us. Just ask Nessie.

What mysteries lay in the darkness beyond the bounds of our perception? And what better metaphor for the spirit of emergent creative collaboration than the lively image of a many-handed giant springing up from the depths beyond?

Introducing Lakes of Fire’s theme for 2014: RELEASE THE KRAKEN. This is an invitation to explore the hidden corners of the psyche and let loose the subconscious, to unleash the hidden beast within you, bursting forth from submerged forces, brought to life from beyond, to the immediate here and now.

Do you want to design, build, and burn the next effigy for Lakes of Fire?

Please e-mail effigy ideas and submissions to before February 28th!!!

We score on 19 categories, in no particular order. Follow this link, to learn more:

The more detailed plans you can give us the better. Just follow the link above.

The deadline for the Effigy Competition is February 28th, and we will decide what the next effigy is, and who is going to lead the build shortly afterwards. If you have any questions please let us know.

Great Lakes Experimental Arts, Inc., 501(c)4 welcomes two new Board Members to its leadership cadre. Ardyth “RD” Paganone has been involved in Lakes of Fire since its inception in 2009, at the Willow Ranch. She was Gate Lead 2009-11 and is based in the Ann Arbor area. Eric “Pirate” Branson is a Chicago-based burner who has rapidly deepened his commitment to the event since he started attending in 2010. He has volunteered with the Effigy Team several years running, and as a Ranger. Pirate brings a wealth of important know-how and experience to the leadership.

Big ups and HUGE thanks to Steve “Planeto” Curl, and Cynthia “Cooky” Jones for looking after the event so gorgeously during their terms on the Board of Directors. Without hard-core volunteers like these, there could be no Lakes of Fire. Much gratitude to those who take responsibility for the event in a legal sense.

That’s what we’ve got for you this week!!

See you at Lakes of Fire 2014!

Are you stealthy? Can you keep a level head? Even amidst bugged out bushes and interlopers? The Department of Perimeter Ninjas (DPN) wants YOU!

Not everyone who wants in, gets in, especially those without tickets. For the max respect in the community, we need some Ninjas to keep the family safe, sound & flowing all around.

Sadly, LoF’s essence and continuity is threatened yearly by interlopers, a.k.a. “gate crashers.” This nuisance causes significant liability issues/concerns, and unwanted stress to our participants and organizers. The perimeter of Lucky Lake provides ample opportunity for these invaders to finagle their way into YOUR event. You can help!

For more information please join our FB group:
Lakes of Fire Department of Perimeter Ninjas

All Interested Ninjas please contact DPN Co-Leads directly:
Earl “~EZ~” Ford
Tony “Tall Tony” Maceratini

The Placement Team

PRINCIPLES: How we do it!

Burning Man and Lakes of Fire's 10 binding principles are simple and can be found here.

The distilled version is this:
1. Ask first
2. Protect the community
3. Leave no trace

Except for the landowner's firewood and ice sales, there will be no sales or concessions of any kind at Lakes of Fire. Sorry, you can't hawk your wares, period.

LEAVE NO TRACE: The Prime Directive!

Leave No Trace is arguably our most cherished principle. This means that we must leave the site in better condition than we found it, showing absolutely no evidence of our having been there. Each participant must remove all items they brought with them – including their trash – when they leave the site.

We also ask that each participant helps clean the full site by picking up any Matter Out Of Place (M.O.O.P.) that they encounter during the event. Smokers, bring a portable ashtray so you don't have to drop your butts on the ground. Please bring trash bags and other waste receptacles to take your trash and recycling home with you. It's everyone's job to Leave No Trace.

Please remember that it's not always a long distance from a little harmless–seeming fun to a MOOP disaster – like a water balloon fight, for example! Practice negative impact, pick up ANYTHING that falls. Following the principles of Leave No Trace at Lakes of Fire is something that makes this community great.

Lakes of Fire can always use more volunteers for Leave No Trace shifts, Land Restoration, and Clean Sweep Crew. Volunteer in advance of the event through

Leave No Trace Team

Did we drop an too much on ye? The big plunge at Lakes of Fire 2014 is only a two months away. You haven’t seen nothing yet!

Thursday-Sunday, June 19th-22nd, 2014

PARKING: East o' the pines!

Parking at 2014’s RELEASE THE KRAKEN has undergone great, Big, CHANGES!! There will be some more details coming out in the next few weeks, but the jist of it is this:

Parking is moving east o’ the pines! You can follow this link, and zoom out once or twice to get an idea. If you’ve been to previous Lakes of Fire events, you’ll recall the long open field at the entry to the property. That’s your new parking lot. G.L.E.A.’s organizing Team Leads believe this will enable the event to continue growing and growing at Lucky Lake! More to come.

Car-pooling with friends, family, camp–mates, or random strangers is highly encouraged. Lakes of Fire's site has parking available, but it is limited. Upon arrival, you may drop off your gear at your location, and then you will be asked to return your car to the parking area. If you do not return your car to the lot within the allotted time, your car may be towed at your own expense, or you may be asked to leave Lakes of Fire, resulting in less of a good time.

If you do leave for an emergency, please stop back at parking upon return.

You may not camp in your car, in the parking lot.

Car camping is permissible if you have a medical condition or will be using your car as part of a camp's infrastructure. You must request a Car Camping Permit ( from the Parking Department by June 1st.

If you receive a Car Camping Permit, decorate your car in some way, to work it in with the atmosphere of Lakes of Fire, your surrounding camp, or to your imagination's extent. You may not drive your 'car camping vehicle' out of your campsite once the event begins, nor may you block roadways or emergency exits.

SOUND: Protocols

Lakes of Fire respects the needs and regulations of the communities surrounding the event. Some of your music may travel beyond our perimeter and into these communities. Therefore, we must limit high-powered sounds to reasonable hours. Basic sound rules are listed below, but please note that they may be subject to change before or during the event. Excessive sound is the single most likely reason that law enforcement officers will visit Lakes of Fire.

1) Report the sound equipment you have with you at the Gate upon entry, even if it's just a boom–box.

2) The Sound Squad (Rangers, Organizers, and Sound Team Volunteers) may ask you to turn your volume down, or completely off. Honor these requests.

3) All sound equipment 100 watts or larger must be registered prior to the event as a Lakes of Fire theme camp. Sound camp registration for 2014's RELEASE THE KRAKEN is now closed. If you are bringing lower powered sound equipment or musical instruments, please check with the Gate or Placement volunteers for information on where to set up your camp. Ask for a Placement or Sound Squad assistance in placement.

4) Bass travels, but not after these hours, during which sub–woofers will be turned off:

* 11:00 P.M on Thursday, June 19th, and ALL early setup days

* Midnight on Friday, June 20th

* 2:00 A.M on Sunday, June 22nd (Saturday night)

* Sub-woofers may resume operation at 10:00 A.M.

5) All other sound equipment must kept below 90dB at 40 feet.

The Sound Squad will be monitoring and working with sound camps throughout the event. Failure to comply with their requests will be grounds for removal. If the police arrive with noise complaints, they may be directed toward camps that violate sound policies. Please protect the safety and success of Lakes of Fire by complying with all sound restrictions when they are in effect.

RADICAL INCLUSION: You belong here!

Anyone may be a part of Lakes of Fire. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community.

No prerequisites exist for being a part of Lakes of Fire, the event, except for having a ticket.

That’s from the 10 Principles of Burning Man, word-for-word. The same holds true at Lakes of Fire. There’s no “outsider.” You don’t have to be a Veteran Jedi Burner or live a certain way to be welcome. You’re a part of it. Gain experience by making incredible experiences happen. Carpe diem. Ride the Kraken. Grab the bull by the horns. Remember, you BELONG HERE!

GIFTING: From all, to all, with love!

Lakes of Fire is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value..

That’s also from BM’s 10 Principles. (You can check them here: Gifts don’t have to be physical to be valuable. Help someone else with their tent. Take a moment to check on someone having a bad day. Repair a busted outfit on the fly. These are ways to give back to the Lakes of Fire community without spending a dime.

The Templegy burns in just 49 days! This info-bot’s synthetic nose can almost smell it! Can you?

That’s all we’ve got for you this week!

ART GRANTS & HONORARIA: This year’s recipients!

Lakes of Fire and the Great Lakes Experimental Arts, Inc. 501(c)(4) that run it are thrilled to announce 2014’s art award recipients, including the art grant and honoraria winners.

The Art Grant program has grown from a budget of $3,000 to $10,000 in just three years! And now we’re giving away art honoraria for existing projects to come to Lakes of Fire, too. :-)

Ticketholders past and present: it is quite literally YOUR MONEY that funds these awards, so on behalf of G.L.E.A., Inc. AND the funded artists: THANK YOU for contributing to Lakes of Fire.

To get more in-depth descriptions of the award winners, just go here!

Here are 2014’s recipients, in no particular order!

DPW: Workin it!

Lakes of Fire happens, in part, through the hard work of a few bold soldiers known as the Department of Public Works. We focus on providing the infrastructure, power, and grunt necessary for the event to run smoothly.

The DPW reminds you that if it's not yours, don't mess with it. Things put in place by LoF DPW, like signage and safety barriers, are there for a reason. Please respect those things and avoid damaging or altering them, lest you be damaged or altered.

PERIMETER NINJAS: Protecting our community!

Lakes of Fire' awesomeness inevitably draws curious thrill seekers without tickets. Gatecrashers are a direct threat to LoF's continued efforts to grow as a community and provide a safe environment for ticketed participants. In response to an increase in gatecrashing incidents, the Department of Perimeter Ninja's (PN's) have been summoned! We call passionate LoFers to service in protecting the perimeter boundaries. The liabilities surrounding this role are higher than any other we've previously encountered. PN's may have to interact with LEO's, Board Members, or unruly gatecrashers or participants. Level heads, professionalism, respect, compassion, and sobriety are necessary character traits needed to solidify our ranks. Conflict is also a possibility. Keeping emotions in check, sticking to the facts while still maintaining autonomy is of the utmost importance! Does DPN sound like the place for you? Email: PNINJAS@LAKESOFFIRE.ORG, sign up, and help protect our borders!

EXODUS: Get outta here!

Lakes of Fire ends at 3:00 PM, Sunday, June 22nd. Be packed up (including your trash!) and out of the gate by that time. No exceptions. If you'd like to help us leave no trace, volunteer online or at the event. Adhere to Exodus directions from the Gate/Exodus staff.and respect the local community as you depart. This means everything you pack out ends up at your own home, NOT on the side of the road or in private dumpsters!

DECOMMODIFICATION: Down with commercial exploitation!

In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. We resist the substitution of consumption for participatory experience.

Aside from the landowner’s sales of ice and firewood, there is no selling of any goods or materials at Lakes of Fire. You cannot hawk your wares. Period.

Lofers don’t run the whole world, but when we gather together, we seek de-commodified means of sharing, rather than commodified methods of exchange. Think creatively about how you can remove the “bottom-lines” of others from your Lakes of Fire experience.

Lakes of Fire encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner resources.

When we go camping together, we have to come ready to survive. We are what we need. Or we bring what we need. We find within ourselves resources we might never have previously thought possible.

Is your brain ready to go on overload at this year’s event? We’ve got more!.
