AMTRAKATHON 2016 Is Almost Here!

Post by Dr. Pyro » Mon Sep 28, 2015 9:20 am

"Oh no, not again!" I hear you cry. Yes, for those of you who still have some brain cells left from last year's slide into bacchanalian excess and debauchery we again are getting ready for AMTRAKATHON 2016! We will be leaving the Roseville Amtrak station on January 30, 2016 at 11:35 a.m. and getting into Reno at 4:00 p.m. For those of you who cannot make the train but want to meet up for the burner party in Reno which will be totally "off the rails", meet up beginning at 7:00 p.m. on the 17th floor of the Regency Tower at the not-particularly-luxurious Sands Regency. Ygmir is looking to take down all of the luxury suites for the party (first come, first served) and the hot tub and sauna are open until 9:00. If you'd like an invitation for the train trip itself (includes roundtrip transportation, all the champagne and beer you want, catered lunch, and room at The Sands) PM me and I'll get one off to you right away. We can only take the first 60 revelers so act fast! Anyone who has ever done this in the past will tell you it is one helluva party.

Psssst: And the password is "pineapple".

OMD! if the brain surgeons I just talked to on the phone are any indication, it may be best for people to reserve their rooms individually.
I hope to know more, when the person I hope to speak with calls back.
I so hope they can....oh, no need to make disparaging remarks.........I hope they can be of better comprehension and help.

I'm thinking of the 4 or 6 suites at the end, like last year.

Count me in. I was kicking myself last year for not going. When the holidays are over and January rolls around I'll be glad to have a night on the town.

And I don't know if it's worth it for me. I can't make it to the bar car, and the idea of a whole weekend of drunken shenanigans is s bit much for me.

it's not a weekend of drunken shennanigans, unless you want that.
the train gets in and everyone gets checked in and eats, then starts to meander up to the suites some of us rent.
staying as long as you want, then goes to bed, meets for breakfast and or a trip out to the playa and back.

you can make it your own, Fishy.
only issue in Reno I'd see is an accessible auto to take you out to the empty, cold and or wet/frozen playa and back.

dooo eeet!!

The Sands person called me back, is out of the office but said she'd note my reservation for the four suites at the north end of 17th floor. We can probably get more if necessary, but would want to do it early.
Check the Sands web site for suite rates......they are pretty reasonable, really. IIRC, around 100 bucks nice top floor view and all.

Hmmm. I missed the MnG this year, I've never made the Amtrakathon, I'd love to see the playa in winter...

Hmmmmmm. It's only $51 bucks for the train from SF. Rooms at the Sands are dirt cheap.

This is a possibility.

Hey Lucky, I'm gonna slip over to see the Morris. I'd love to have you join me. Or...If there's no snow on the sidewalks I could skate over and back in a wink.

is there a train or bus option, Patsh, that would be fun? Seems also, there are enough folks down your way, that if a few came, it'd be a damn fun car pool!!

Thanks, Ratty! It's definitely a possibility!
(how nebulous is that ?!!)

Yggy, I looked into flying, but crossed that off.
Train would be really cool, but I doubt it'd be very direct... or cheap.
Bus is a thought... but also probably not very direct.

I'll ask around here if anyone else might want to make a road trip. That really could be FUN!
And, I'll do some research on train and bus.

(update later this week...)

Well, after chatting with Ygmir, I am in! I will fly out to Reno and back, no freakin' trains for me. Amtrak doesn't have a very good "track record" back East here, seems to run off the tracks regularly. This should be fun. First-timer here, this should be fun.
