It'd be a Genuine Hoot to meet up with fellow burners on the trip out- Last year I didn't see a single car that I could be certain was headed for BRC until I was in Elko- And I had covered 2000 miles of I-80! On the way back, though, I passed the same minibus-with-trailer at least ten times. I'd honk and wave every time, and either they didn't see the dust on my ride and the playa bike on the roof or they were just plain rude.
Maybe we should arrange a party at one of those boring-as-hell Iowa rest stops- Or at the cool one near Bonneville.....Or even a gathering at Thunder Mountain Park......

Do you already have people your riding with...or do you need another person? I am totally down for either, cuz im looking for at least one person that has been to at least one other burn, or some new-bies like myself. Anyways, hit me up, and maybe we can keep chatting and plan on something before then. Im from south bend, and always looking for new friends...especially when my 'friends' here...just dont get it. Later

Alas, I'm "altering" my Honda Elephant to function as combo transportation and sleeping quarters, which will eliminate my capacity to carry a wing man. Me, supplies and three domes fills it up nice and tight.....Still think we should organize a Midwest Burners Rendezvous somewhere along the line, though. And I'm plotting some Coastal Art Attacks along Lake Michigan this Summer......

I was thinkin i could probably do the same thing with my explorer. Now i havent been to any burns before...have you? Cuz i could use some advice, or maybe someone to follow out there. I know i would possibly only have room for myself as well. As for those domes...do you mean those big water cooler jugs? I am a rookie to this, so im tryin to see if i could make it. I have different ideas too, hit me up.

I'm a 21 year old male newbie in Chicago interested in meeting others going to BM 2005. I too am on the Chicago mailing list but haven't gotten any mailings yet. I was told to look on the regional boards for new contacts. If anyone has any advice or is looking for another person to go with (or knows someone in Chicagoland who's going) please let me know! Thanks

Nope....Three GEODESIC domes, transported in bundles. 18', 12' and 6' diameter, to be stacked and then climbed on for the view and a cool breeze.....(last year, a couple of us in Hushville watched the Burn from there.) I call it The Snowman, for its resemblance to same. For water I use the rectangular "suitcases".killercrash26 wrote: As for those domes...do you mean those big water cooler jugs? .
Sometime soon I plan to file my observations about the long trek out I-80, offering some fun places to stop and where to provision up...I'm considering actually publishing a book!

there's a couple of us in Minnesota
Hey all, I've perused your thread and think that a mid-west meet up for the drive over would be excellent. I'm also a newbie but have been chatting with a few other people from MN. It doesn't seem like there are a whole lot of other mid-west burners active right now. Maybe it's the winter and they're all to frozen to type. Anyways, I'm pretty sure I'll be driving and coming down 35S to I-80 in Iowa. Don't have any definite plans at the moment though. I'd love to know if you decide on a meet up though.

After browsing the site a little more, I've discovered a mid-west regional website. They are have a burn sometime in May. Probably a good way to meet other burners and get a feel for the whole thing. Anyways look here http://www.midwestburners.com/ for more info.

Hey white,
i would have to agree with you there...im all about havin ourselves a little convoy out to NV. I have just received a notice that i have a certified letter to go pick up at the post office. I am pretty sure its my ticket. I was taking some advice, and im thinkin about converting the explorer. Into something like a sleeping spot as well as my ride down there. Im gettin anxious, so hit me up and keep this chat near the top. Later all.

Maybe the cool thing to do would be for us all to have a rendezvous, somewhere on the Midwest side of the trip, and sorta informally convoy out....I personally HATE having to drive in formation, especially over long distances, as people have all different sizes of bladders and attention spans. But a get-together to identify each other's vehicles and possibly exchange cell numbers seems like an interesting idea....Those who "take point" on the drive could advise the stragglers of road conditions, weather, new roadside attractions and the like...There's a good place to meet in eastern Iowa- the "world's Largest Truck Plaza", in Walcott, exit 284- It's got EVERYTHING, including a HUGE trucker store with every kind of chrome-girlie-mudflap-12-volt widget you could imagine.....killercrash26 wrote:Robot...

K-Crash, it's about 2100 miles(1600 as the crow flies) "door to door" for me- Seven fuel stops, although I top off before crossing the Salt Lake expanse to Wendover....And you spend so much of the trip on I-80 that it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to get lost, except where there's construction....It used to be dodgy around Salt Lake City, but wasn't bad last time- If you're tired, the first little bit when you leave '80 and head up 447 can be confusing, but at that point you can just follow all the obvious burner cars anyway. South Bend's right on 80/90, so you just have to jump in and hang on!
What I'm planning to do to my Honda Elephant is temporarily remove the front passenger seat....still haven't decided for sure on that one. The seats are designed to all fold down and make a bed, but only if you're from a planet where people have backwards spines will you be the least bit comfortable. And I take the back seats out, anyway! What I'll probably end up doing is constructing a lightweight bulkhead-frame from PVC, that can be stuck behind the front seats with a sheet or blanket wedged in....That will isolate the front seats from alittle bit of the dust exposure if I just come and go from the rear hatch. There's a removable moon roof over the rear section that I thought I'd make a smaller frame for, lined with furnace air-filter material, to allow heat and air circulation with reduced dust intrusion. The rear of an Element is plenty big enough for sleeping, especially if you excercise some load management or just offload your excess junk (anvil, spacesuit, scraps of aluminum?!? I had all that crap!!!)into your trusty Geodesic Dome.....(sold separately)
It may sound stupid to sleep in the car when you've got a whole huge dome to sleep in, but BROTHER, IT GOT FUCKING COLD LAST YEAR!!

Robot,
Yea, i think that would be a good idea....at least if we can meet up, change numbers...and go from there. I got my ticket tuesday in the mail. I guess they are all out of the $200 tix. But im thinking about leaving Thursday nite, and hoping to get there by saturday morning. I am thinking either of traveling alone, or maybe seein if anyone needs a ride along the way. I havent been before, so im thinkin about the X-mas tree burn to get some ideas, and hear first hand accounts of the experience. I am not really sure what to expect, but thats the best part of it. Anyways, i will be checkin back with this chat often, so keep it goin...later all.

Unless you're on the early-in list to help set up a theme camp or art project, you should count on resistance at the gate....There were plenty of folks lined up when I got there at 2 AM Monday....And the pace you set for yourself, two short days to get there, is DOABLE but WILL kick your ass at LEAST a little. If you're driving alone, as I was last year, be aware that you'll be cruising through dark territory without the nice full moon I had last year....killercrash26 wrote:Robot,

So if you were waitin to get in...how long did you have to wait? I had thought the event started on like saturday or something. I am hoping to get a big tent or something, and just be out there. I dont know how much room i will have in my truck. I am already ready already.

I think it took an hour to get in, at 2AM Monday morning- But we were moving almost the whole time, and the time passed quickly. Given the volume of traffic I really have to credit the gate crew.killercrash26 wrote:So if you were waitin to get in...how long did you have to wait? Burning Man OFFICIALLY begins at MIDNIGHT PLUS ONE SECOND on Sunday night, meaning the very FIRST minute of Monday is the first minute of the event. When I got to the gate two hours later, I asked my greeter, "What have I missed?".
If it just works out that you'll be in that neck of the woods earlier, you can stop at Rolling Thunder State Park (weird "outsider" art constructions!), shoot over to Reno, have a swim at Pyramid Lake (check with the locals), or just warm a barstool at Bruno's.....By all means, stop and check out Empire and Gerlach on your way in or take the Green Tortoise bus (5 bucks- goes to charity) during the event. I even met Jesus in Gerlach! (Okay, a guy NAMED Jesus....he DID say he was from Israel, though.)

PS. My girlfriend and I both live n Chicago and are going to BM this year again. There were 2 large camps full of Chicagoans last year. We camped with group of friends from Seattle :)
When I find out more info about their activities this year I'll post it here.
Or You can go to http://www.purefuture.com and discretly ask for more info:) (many BOP camp members post there, although it's not BM related site/forum, so be carefull - many people will laugh at You :)
Or check http://www.synchroni-city.org - Milwaukee/Chicago based event/organization. They throw kinda local decompression party every year :)
Or find out about next parties Chilluminati Crew is throwing, here then come over, find me and have a talk :D
