Virgin Burner hoping to go in 2017!!!!!

Post by sallycakes » Tue Sep 20, 2016 5:52 am

Fellow Burners
I have been following Burning adventures for quite a few years now. Totally mesmerized with it hoping that 2017 is the year I actually get to join in and experience it myself.
My friends are not ready to commit or just simply not keen as this is something I have been wanting to do for quite a few years now I'm reaching out to you fellow Burners.
I would love to join someone group or camp if anyone out there would be kind enough to take me with them so I can experience Magic of Burn for myself - I will be forever grateful!!!! I'm currently based in London but I will be moving to Canada early next year.
Hoping this post will lead me to my fostering tribe :) :) :)

Welcome, and what do you offer a camp? What do we know about you which would make us want to say yes?

Second, and not nearly as important, what type of camp do you envision? What atmosphere and level of activity?

You can always go solo, even coming from overseas it is possible. For example, the village of Hushville sees a number of traveling first timers, we pride ourselves on virgin enculturation. I often host a newbie or two as long as we feel we are a good fit. Many camps will want you for your dues, so be careful about who takes you on and who you decide to join. Follow your heart, but do some research.

Have you ever been camping? That can make a world of difference, even car camping on a weekend.

Hey Sallycakes,

I totally relate to where you are right now, I was in the same position myself early last year and ended up going solo. I decided early on that joining a camp was the right way to go in terms of being able to readily connect with people and form friendships (which I did). I went with a themed camp called Barbie Death Camp who are just awesome! I was also very fortunate to spend most of my time with a sub camp while I was there who were like my Burner family. You can request to join BDC, more details are here: http://barbiedeathcamp.com/about - As it's a themed camp you do have to pay dues, but you get a lot in return which makes a huge difference when you're solo and flying in.

One thing I would do differently next year would be to stay overnight in a hotel when first arriving. I flew into San Fran and had great plans to drive all the way to Reno with one pit stop at Walmart. Needless to say I didn't get that far as I was too tired. I'm considering just flying straight to Reno next year which will cut down the drive significantly.

Also, think about when you leave the burn. You'll probably be really tired (I was) and want to stop off somewhere to wash, sleep and eat. I left on the day of the burn to avoid the mass exodus. I kid you not, it took three attempts before I found somewhere in Reno that wasn't booked out. The first two were these really large casino/hotel places (Peppermill and Sands Regency). I ended up staying in a motel called the Vagabond. It was really overpriced and rather dingy (not to mention the barn yard sounds!). I was so looking forward to a hot shower but soon found out it was broken. So lesson learned, I would book well in advance if you know which day you're going to leave, or call ahead as soon as you can to secure a booking.

Hope that helps! You'll have a great time, solo or not! :D

Welcome to eplaya Sallycakes. You have plenty of time to research and prepare. Although when it comes time to go you won't be ready. This isn't specific to you. None of us are ever ready. When you decide to either join a camp or go solo keep in mind your value to that camp. AntiM is right. Many camps just want your dues. can you arrive early by a few days and help build? Stay late and break down the camp? Are you willing to pick up kitchen duties or cook a meal? Maybe you can find burners in your area to connect with. All the info you seek is here. Settle in. Search around. Ask some questions and get comfortable.

Click on 'Home' and look through the threads that interest you. Transportation, cars, Mutant vehicles, bikes, shelter, costumes, food. We have it all.

We are all a bit tired now but smiling.

Also go to the Greeter section and introduce yourself. Picking out a camp is more than just paying for a shade structure. they will also want to know a bit about you. And so do we.

All you need:
  • Ticket
  • Water
  • Tent
  • Food
  • Goggles
  • Dust mask
  • Personal lighting
  • Sunscreen
You can roll in and find an empty spot, talk to people camped nearby and ask if they know of any problem with the spot you want to pitch your tent.

There are camps that will "foster" you but be prepared to spend a lot of money, potentially get scammed (many overseas campers in 2015 arrived to find their paid-for camp didn't exist), and miss out on a large part of Burning Man that comes from being self reliant, surviving in the desert with your own two hands and contributing art, music, stories, or a gift only you can provide.

And some more on the Australian Burning Seeds:

Burning Seed the Australian local burn will take place from Sept. 28 til Oct. 3, 2016 at Matong NSW Australia

At least we all can listen to the Red Earth Radio as Burning Man Information Radio will relay the signal.

THANK YOU all for your advice - very much appreciated!!!! It seems like I need to a little bit more of a research on camp tribes.

To answer some of your questions yes I have been camping on many, many occasions before - festivals, surfing trips, weekends away and very much enjoyed it so that would not be an issues at all. Think I would actually really like to be involved with setting up the camp, seeing it all come together would be quite special. I'm not a bad cook and can serve up a nice drink too.

I would say I'm curious, spiritual, explorer, adventurer and a dreamer. Life is about learning, embracing and creating memorable moments, having fun, exploring your individuality and connecting with other beautiful souls out there. Been very lucky and met some incredible people on my journey so far and hoping that going to Burn will allow me to meet more of incredible individuals that I can connect with and share some truly memorable times together.

Loads of love
Sallycakes :)
