Post by ais4ali » Wed May 04, 2005 5:29 pm

HELLO!!! my name is ali and i am going to BM for the frst time this year. i dont have a reliable enough car to take into the desert so i have decided to take the bus or train.
I have come to discover the bus will only be able to take me so far... such as winnemuca. does anyone have any ideas? or does anyone know anything about the bus system that i dont?
im really excited and will make if work no matter what. I may or may not be traveling alone..
I am meeting friends there from Oregon and Canada so they will be able to bring my water for me.. but everything else ill be backpacking in.
stay well!!!!!! ~~~~~~~~

It'll probably be cheaper and faster to share a ride with someone. There's a rideshare board that comes online a few months before the event, or you can use craigslist. You're at an advantage in that you don't have a lot of stuff and quite a few people have to pass through Sacramento on their way.

There's also a rideshare board in center camp if you can't get a ride home with the same person you went up with.

I think he could also use the "Share" board in the meantime...

If there is supposed to be a rideshare board, why isn't it up yet???

It's what you make it.

worthy idea

ill definitely keep that in mind.... the train would be 80 bucks to winnemuca alone...... although if i am going by myself i dont know how smart that is for a 20yr old girl to basically hitchhike to BM. i Have full faith in the community that awaits me in black rock city... yet its the rest of the world i worry about... well see though,, thanks for the heads up on the rideshare board.. ill keep my eyes peeled  <---- those are my eyes... being... peeled

Why Winnemucca? I mean if you don't get a full ride, more people are going to go through Reno.

good point

Post by ais4ali » Thu May 05, 2005 11:02 pm

thats a very good point... i guess originally i planned on winnemuca because its closer and if i had to make extreme measures and take a taxi or something the rest of the way... it would be cheaper... but i think ill heed your advice and go to reno if i end up doing it this way. Shucks, maybe ill even buy a car before august.... tempting...

I'm really confused. You're in sacramento, yes? The one in california? Then Winnemucca is by no means closer to either california or burning man. Reno is the closest place. Amtrack and greyhound both stop in reno, yes? Then all you have to do is figure out how the folks who fly into reno get out to blackrock and do the same thing.

Take the bus to Reno, and my fiance and I will get you to the playa if you have not made other arrangements. Winnemucca is out of the way. Let me know if you are interested.

post on the rideshare board.. plenty of bay area folks (including me) will be tootling through Sac, and would be open to picking you up, especially if you are at a gas station off of the highway.. :^)
