Potable water available on Playa?

Post by claybcook » Wed Jul 16, 2025 12:03 pm

In previous years, USS (the portapotty people) would deliver or stop by and off load potable water for a fee. USS seems to be out of that business. Is there any other reliable source of potable water once in BRC? I could fill up in Reno on the way in, but pulling an empty trailer is easier than one full of water.

For on-playa water, please send an email to
[email protected] for pricing, office location and office hours! Ask about "flag down water."

Water weighs 8 pounds per gallon. It is part of your load, but your vehicle can handle it and it will not appreciably affect gas mileage. Filling in Gerlach helps the local economy. Commercial services help the vendor. Plastic water helps no one and harms. I fill up at home with good water.

My understanding is that United Site Services will be doing flag down water fillups for RV's. However, the nature of that service (flagging down and hoping for excess supply) can be spotty - the more fully booked they are, the less time and excess supply they may have for that business. There are other potable water delivery services available at Burning Man, but they generally require more advance planning (they take reservations and are typically booked solid in spring).

As some seeing eye noted, water is about 8 pounds per gallon. Especially if you're filling up in Reno or someplace closer, it shouldn't have an impact on fuel economy. In past years my partner and I have both hauled water for our entire camp as well as arranged to have containers filled on playa, we didn't notice any meaningful change to the fuel costs to get to BRC.
