Dining at Burning Man
i did MRE's for 2 burns while roughing it in a van, and the class "A" MRE's were not too shabby. they do produce an undesirable amount of trash though. (good for the 8 hour long alpha storm)
one of the things that help the whole food thing work is to compartmentalize your cooler with air/water tight bins for different items, like eggs, chicken, etc. that way things don't get wet and go to crap, and or cross contaminate.
one year jim had a bad case of what we called "chicken water". a cooler of water, raw chicken, and everything else that he had as foods in there. (think scary pink liquid). i was scared to grab a beer form that foul mess.
small & medium snap lid bins have really made it for us.
pre-made foods work well too. we had a full fledged thanksgiving dinner one year on slick-rock in moab. all pre-made and it came out surprisingly well.

Hey all...
This is one of the most awesome compilations of info I have seen in quite a while...
So...
As a gift to y'all (and y'ain't's, too!) I want to pull the suggestions, ideas, and the goods from here and distill it into a categorized (kinda, anyway) compilation, and have it available on a website, freely available to all who care to know. Prolly my website as I have space (and control) over it.
After all... we all know MRE's are a workable emergency food source, but you gotta go thru 3 pages to find that out (and that they can be bland, and separate parts are available).
As it'll be a lot easier to do it in a cookbook fashion, rather than just restated posts, instead of just copying posts I am planning on crediting (via their screen name) all the people who contributed to this. Maybe as such it will live in infamy. Kinda like one of my famous menus from my chef days...
So, what y'all think? Good or not so good??

I'd also like to point out that Horizon Organic Milk offers their wares in shelf-stable steri-paks. My local Costco sells cases of the chocolate variety for $12. I always make sure to bring a couple cases of that.
Attention omnivores! You DO NOT have to settle for soy milk on the Playa!!!

If you're anything like me, it'll be the first and last time you tried it. I actually spat it out the first time I tasted Yoo-Hoo.
Forget it, stick with the Horizon Organics. Their vanilla milk is good, too.

Ah well, if I don't like them, there will be someone who will.
Right now I'm reminding myself to quit eating all the raspberries and freeze some to take to the playa, but dang! They're right off the canes still warm from the sun; I'm having trouble not grazing right outside my kitchen door. So much for sharing, eh?

That's what I'd be doing. Raspberries are darn near sacred and fresh fruit is.AntiM wrote: Right now I'm reminding myself to quit eating all the raspberries and freeze some to take to the playa, but dang! Damn straight...I've got stained paws and scratched legs from Going Bear on our black raspberry brambles! I haven't had time to replant the garden since we moved- I used to come home, tear off my work clothes and graze the garden for snap peas, heirloom cherry tomatoes and strawberries.....rrRRRAughhLLgh...*making Drooling Homer face*

Blackberries! Oh man, I haven't had ANY this year. Usually by now I've had cobblers and lots of raw berries. Not this year. Sniff. I've got some major jealousy going on about having all those blackberries.

Great tips all!
There was some good feedback on food from last year:
http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic. ... highlight=
"Recovery from 2004. Planning for 2005."
Started talking about food about 12 messages down and didn't look back....
Two extras... My friend and I ended up bringing and entire case of Marie Sharp's - Habanero Pepper Sauce last year to give away.... oh my word...
He absolutely ADORES spicy/hot food... and this stuff is freaking amazing... to quote from their web site:
http://www.drchilepepper.com/acatalog/M ... ters_.html
"Marie Sharp's - Habanero Pepper Sauce
A unique carrot-based blend with key lime juice achieves the perfect balance between flavor and heat."
The stuff is so good I would drip some on my wrist and lap it up last year.
It's not your regular tabasco death-burn... its so... flavorful.
We ended up giving away most of the bottles during the Sunday traffic-to-traffic stop turned "wild fun extra food fiesta" last year.... and created more than a few converts.
The best combo turned out to be cucumbers + cheddar cheese + pepper salami (from Trader Joe's). Gods... I'm drooling just thinking about it.
Secondly, on the return trip we found that we had forgotten and left in the car in a shady spot - a small sealed cooler containing:
1. 4 Red Bulls
2. One bag of Trader Joe's chocolate-covered peanut-butter filled pretzels.
Amazingly enough... in the four days that we were there the drinks had remained COLD and the pretzels UNMELTED (though they turned to mush after opening two hours later).
They were SO unexpected and wonderful for the trip into Reno.
Think its time to do the same this year... but on purpose. Ahhh...

Of course they are still around. They have a half life that's the envy of uranium!Magaladon wrote:Martiansky wrote:Anyone know if powdered eggs are nasty or if they make them anymore?
While it's been quite some time since I've eaten them, I seem to remember that they're not all that great, but useful for things like omelets. And yes, they are still around.

I freeze raspberries all the time and they stay sweet. They do get extra juicy however, I have to seal the containers with duct tape and double bag them to keep the juice out of the rest of my cooler. Perfect for drinks and on top of pancakes. Ummm, playacakes.I've heard the raspberries lose their sweetness after freezing...anyone know if this is the case?
I did a playameat pass through the canned meats aisle of the grocery store yesterday, to collect vital stocks of Dinty and smoked oysters- There are SCADS of new preserved meat entrees in room-temp packs! They're designed for the microwave, but most can be boil-in-bagged as well. A much more civilized way to get my meat fix than having to kill, skin and gut a Hapless Hippie, especially with my tiny, near-useless forearms. RRRRRRAARRRRRRRGGGH! *stomping around*

this was a really good topic!
well for my little burning man cuisine help:
I really never felt like cooking.. even the little camp butane flame thing looked too complicated for me to set up once out there.
so..
things I loved:
-cost plus greek delicacies in tins (stuffed tomaotes + grape leaves) cold!
-pop tarts
-chilled fruit cups (mom used to put em in my lunch)
-chilled pudding cups (chocolate)
-nutella (outta the jar)
-nuts
-little sake bottles (warm or cold)
-chili outta a can
-pate in a tin ( I know.. )
-smoked oysters
-individually wrapped crackers
-japanese rice cracker snax
-La Brea bakery homeade granola with soy milk
-Kern's diet sodas
-jerky
-dried fruits and trail mix
-trader joe's tubs of mini cookies
On the way back to LA I stopped into a Wendy's in a really pretty strip mall in Carson City and ordered some huge burger and a frostie ... normally never a thing I do but.. well, it tasted soooo good. :D
