The fruit of fruits!
Re: The fruit of fruits!
Bigdane, Winco (there are 2 in Reno) sells awesome figs in the bulk section, two varieties. The store is bigbox cash only 24/7, the produce and most of their stuff is goooood also. I see the chocolate as an issue unless you have a (BIG!!) RV fridge. Try granola, mix it with dried figs, blue berries, cherries, raisins etc all from winco's dried/bulk foods (cut up apples) nom nom nom. You could hand it out in plastic beer cups, with a sealed single milk box (or dry with a bottle of water) and make a lot of hungry morning burners happy!
Edit to add: I meant watermelon and black cherries in my above post, delicious combo.

I no longer live in Chico, which means that my mother no longer comes up to visit me, which means we don't go to the chocolate covered prune store outside the "twin cities" of Marysville and Yuba City.
Chocolate covered prunes are the bomb. If you make chocolate covered figs and no one wants them, you can come by Terminal City and feed me into an insulin coma.

If you're talking about the stand that was on the east side of HWY70 north of MV, it's no longer there. Tore down and replaced with warehouses.

It is winter in my heart.
Long, cold, hopeless winter.
Please, bigdane, I need your chocolate covered figs even more.
And we were going to a wedding in Chico next month...

I had a chocolate covered fig for the first time about a month ago. While I'm sure the quality of the chocolate had something to do with it, I could not believe how good it was, or that I'd gone all my life without having one, and suddenly references to them are all over ePlaya. Suddenly I can't NOT see chocolate-covered figs.
Were they here all the time?

@bigdane,
Here in so-cal the mission fig is great and plentiful that time of year but doesnt have a great shelf life. ... However the most interesting concoction I have had the pleasure of eating recently consisted of figs, point reyes blue cheese and apricot jam. Spread it on some pan toasted bread (use olive or walnut oil) wow.
For a better shelf life try medjool dates, also close to harvest at burn time. Bonus on playa, show up wherever bacon is being fried, wrap your dates in about a 1/3 slice and hand out. Instant epicurorgasm. Even better with aformentioned blue cheese.

I Will do this camp with you!5280MeV wrote:BEHOLD THE DURIAN, KING OF FRUIT
Seriously, I bought one of these monsters in college. You had to carry it in a mesh bag or it would tear up your hands. The smell is overpowering - it is actually banned in the subways of Singapore. Smells like gasoline or bad meat or something else entirely. It actually tastes pretty good and has the texture of a weird pudding.
One of my bad-idea daydreams is to set up a Durian Camp - serve durian drinks, durian dishes, make durian suntan lotion, live and bask in the smell until we acclimate and become it. We would have to warn everyone attempting to set up camp around us. The plane ride back would also be fun.

A Durian camp would be awesome! I love durian. I think a stack of durian to the playa is in order. A durian a day keeps almost everyone away!

... the solution???
How serious are we here?
I'm already committed to a little camp, but I could see a little plywood bar, run it maybe three evenings, or just a single durian party and put the event in the book.

Re: The fruit of fruits!
On our last trip through the grocery store, on impulse I snagged five bags of frozen fruit in the grocery store in Fernley. Popped them into the dry ice cooler, wrapped in newspaper. I split a bag with Ken every afternoon until they ran out. And we were very sad when they ran out. All the frozen, sweet, juicy goodness. We will be purchasing many more bags this year.

Re: The fruit of fruits!
For gifting, I like the idea of chocolate covered figs or just any dried fruit (apricots, craisins) you can keep in your own reusable container as you offer them up and pass them out. The moop concern is that if you give someone an orange, you give them the responsibility of properly disposing of the rind. Same with apple cores and coconut shells. Last year I went around feeding people chilled grapes but kept the stems on me.
For your own camp you can do whatever you want with the right cooling set up. That matter is in place as long as it stays in your camp and gets packed out. I like canned pears for camp meals.

Re: The fruit of fruits!
Sometimes you get ideas from these conversations...
I realized that this was going to eat up my budget to go to Burning Man in 2013. Oh well, you can't have everything in life. When I thought about the things that would keep me from returning to the desert, I didn't really imagine that that list would include the ideas that I got from it.
I never really had any idea what I was doing, but kept working on it. I only even ate a durian once in my life. The truck that I borrowed to drive it to the regional was a manual, and I didn't know how to drive that. Everything was learning from scratch.
I managed to get it working, and ruined many people's cups. Some people loved it, others hated it. It was a lot of fun.
