Is there a Winco there? They have the dry hummus in bulk. I know there are Wincos in CA, just don't know where.

The only one I know if is in Chico. I know there's more, but not in my usual stomping grounds. That may be a suburban/big box option...AntiM wrote:theCryptofishist wrote:I could only find the canned or prepared hummus before I left. Rainbow Grocery in Frisco has just about every consumed-by-hippie dry bin item imaginable, including semi-instant soups and beans, as I recall.

Re: Food: What's good/bad?
OK, I don't care where you're from, except for Texas, of course, but what food? The playa is no monster. I live in the High Desert, all the time, a bit higher than the playa, and if a banana I buy on the way down and they keep for 3 days at my house in Oregon, it keeps for 3 days on the playa. I have a couple of bananas on my cereal or granola with shelf stable, no refrig Horizon milk the first few days. Like home. Other fresh fruit goes in my refrigerator but could easily go in my cooler, which I bring two of. Everything gets at least the double bag treatment. I use regular ziplock inside and the sliders outside, and sometimes a triple bag for some sensitive things. Your cooler stays colder if you don't always drain the water off. But you must be careful not to have food contaminate the water and vice-versa. Good seals on bags and multiple bags and keep them up out of the water. Now, I do not eat a lot, doing some canned food, some campers freeze dried, some Annie Chung's noodle bowls and soups. like Miso soups. I have a small freezer because I have an ancient RV motorhome, but this is an extra, I could easily survive without it. I bring precooked bacon and chicken to add to some box mixes. Makes them yummiest, but could, and have used canned for both. I also rarely use my RV stove, instead using an MSR Reactor water boiler, boils a liter of water in less than 3 minues, for coffee, tea, those soups, noodle bowls, box mixes, etc. doesn't heat up inside. My MH never had AC from the manufacture - Boise in '77. Food is such a personal preference, but so many of us don't eat much out there. Whie sme, though far fewer numbers, cook up a storm. Which are you? I continue to bring more than I will ever use on the just in case theory. I do not want less than I MAY need under some freak circumstance. I can always gift it or bring it back

Re: Food: What's good/bad?
I'll be travelling from Ireland so I think best option is to buy fresh either in Reno if you're flying in there, or San fran which actually is a lot cheaper to fly into, and refridgerate everything. think San fran is about 3 half hours drive to Reno.
Try cut down on packaging at all costs, you will need to take rubbish with you so less packaging the better, fruit and tinned items should keep all week in a coolbox, everything else refridgerate.
This is how I intend to do it:
Eggs Eggs Eggs "little waste, full of protein"
Fruit: Bananas, Apples, Oranges, Grapes Vit C for repair and protection for immune system
Cereals
Milk
Yogurt
Tinned Tuna, salmon, sardines
Tuna salads
Salad stuff: peppers, spinach, lettuce, tomatos, scallions, chillis, garlic, olives, carrots etc.
Wholewheat brown bread
Soup tinned
Drink:
RUM "lots"
Orange Juice
Tonic
lime
Water "lots" reading some of the posts on main board suggested amount consumed per day 1 gallon... I don't know how accurate that is but you can never have too much water, can gift it if you don't need it all yourself
Pm me if any queries, it's a much bigger commitment travelling long distance, but I know it will be worth it.

Re: Food: What's good/bad?
edbrez, I, too, bring fresh things and use my cooler to keep them so. But be sure to have a back up. Bring enough canned or boxed things, just in case. Shit happens. For example, I have kept milk all week. But it was for White Russians, not essential for my survival. Shelf stable milk, that needs no refrigeration, Horizon in the box is better for my real needs. Plan B's can save your Burn.

Don't worry so much about food...seriously, you will not eat much. If you cannot carry all your food easily then it's excessive, unless you plan to feed lots of other people.
You could survive quite happily on two Clif bars a day, and water.

Maladroits probably right, you're likely not to be all that hungry, but not everyone reacts that way, you may be ravenous. As well documented here, protect your food with double/triple bags from cooler water, because your cooler stays cold better with the water in it than draining it off, just insure your survival with some kind of back up. And, again, do not wait for the playa to get your experience with ice and coolers, especially if you want to do fresh.

Thanks for heads up, yeah I know canned is an option, just prefer as much fresh as I can really....teardropper wrote:Maladroits probably right, you're likely not to be all that hungry, but not everyone reacts that way, you may be ravenous. As long as refridgerated should be ok
Milk for White russians.... Well there is always another breakfast option instead of cereal, one of my five a day, no doubt
Tinned food is great, beans are a stable diet with fearful consequences
I will bring a varied canned versus fresh amount of food, if fresh spoils, will have back up.
There is always Beef Jerky
Just don't want a massive amount of packaging and cans piling up really, "Moop", if I can avoid it at all.
Your right though, I probably won't be too hungry out there, hunger will hopefully be somewhat supressed most nights at least
Just when I want a bit of nutrition I will crave a fresh meal more than canned variety, if that trails off at the end of the week, it won't be an issue anyway cos I'll have time when its over to eat well again, i'll have a couple of days after event to enjoy in San Fran recoperating before I fly home to Ireland.

i think I'm joining Stag camp if they'll have me, I really wanna be as self sufficient as possible, while having the freedom to volunteer in lamplighters occationally and Temple Guardians.
i might come for tea some evening though if you'll have me over at Barbie Death Camp for a yarn or two

How about a couple of favorites...
Saved us in the flavor department and we used the oil for cooking/seasoning, artichoke hearts and green/black olives. Yum yum.
Vienna sausage was a great snack and you can drink the broth, also FRUIT cups! Delicious and the juices is just another bit of snack sustenance.

Last time, I scored a couple of cases of Ensure. No matter what else I was eating or not eating, I made sure I gulped down one of these, morning, noon and night. No matter how well I'm hydrated, I'm always thirsty out there, so if my nutrition is liquid, it's easy to take.

Big fan of Greek salad. Artichoke hearts, olives, tomatoe, cheese, onions, whatnot.VampireKitten wrote:How about a couple of favorites...

Re: Food: What's good/bad?
That's a good strategy. I just googled it and it says Ensure has 12g of protein in one 8-oz serving--almost a meal's worth--or 25g of protein in their high-protein variety, which is actually probably more protein than the average meal.Ugly Dougly wrote:Last time, I scored a couple of cases of Ensure. My version of that are C4rnation Instant Breakfast (ready to drink). I always have one in the cooler. 14g of protein. Usually I will have frosted shredded wheat with a Horizon Farms chilled milk box for my playa breakfast, but if that sounds disruptive to my groove I can always sip on an Instant Breakfast without any trouble.
I aim for ~15g of protein per meal in general, in the real world, but that or more on the playa. Fish (and something to go with it) is my most common dinner. I have a lot of salmon and sardines & PB&J in reserve for that reason. Nuts, jerky and Luna bars travel in my bag.
I skip Granola bars, for the most part. I was surprised to see how little protein the average one has. Bars with peanuts do slightly better.

Delicious!!!
Now we are talking food.... A Pineapple always ticks a couple boxes, and coconuts & Water melon give food and hydration, and make great cocktail holders

Ed, you'll probably want net bag to dry out melon rinds and other fresh food remnants before you put them into your trash. Helps a lot.
If you serve melon to other people, be ready to take the rinds back in case the person you've served doesn't have a little trash bag handy.

Wonder how it would be like going through customs, Large container of white powder "Over here Sir" (puts on gloves in backround)
