Snow cone machines

Post by JezebelinHell » Mon Jul 21, 2008 6:00 am

Who's used them on the playa? What works and what doesn't? We're not doing one this year, but the Gay Friendly Church of Satan (i.e. Unicornios Satanicos) is thinking about setting up a "Sell your soul for a sno-cone" station at next years burn and we're pretty clueless on what to get. I've been scouring the internet, but there are so many price ranges and different models that I'm getting a bit intimidated. I love the idea of shaved ice, but most of those machines look like you have to freeze ice into a mold, and that would be fairly inconvenient on the playa. Anyone with experience have any recommendations? I'm pretty sure my Snoopy sno-cone machine isn't gonna hack it.

We have an old-fashioned hand crank machine, the big Japanese kind.

Advantages: it is hand cranked, uses block ice which we can get at antartica, and we already own it.

Disadvantages: heavy, you have to know how to sharpen the blade, and they're expensive.

Don't forget about The Health Police- They'll be looking for those distributing foodstuffs! You'll have to comply with regulations or risk a fine and possibly other consequences.

Wouldn't shaved ice or snowcones fall under the "Bar ice" exemption in re: the health code? It's just ice and flavoring, right?

Or because of the fact that it's processed (shaved via machine) turn it into a food item, then? Actually, as I type this, I'm guessing the later because the machine that shaves the ice has to be proven clean.

Check out this page for a really good resource on setting up a sno cone machine at BM. Yes you will need a permit to serve snocones and yes they do check.

As convenient as the big ole commercial grade machine is, what I wouldn't give for a snoopy sno-cone machine! What could be more all American than that? I'm hesitant to offer any 'spiked' sno cones this year, wouldn't you need a liquor permit for that?

I believe there's a provision which allows for "Bars" and what's the difference between a sno-cone and a mai-tai, chemically?

That said, I think LEOs are primarily focusing on underage drinking and clean bar practices.
