vacuum sealing
vacuum sealing
this is my first burn i dont really know what to expect besides what ive read on here but..
i thought it might be a good idea to vacuum seal prepared foods to save room, reduce MOOP and maybe be a convenient way to heat up food..has anybody done this or have any thoughts on this?
i also thought this would be a great way to compact trash and other items.

We use a vacuum sealer every year to pack good meals with minimal garbage. It's quite common within my local community of burners actually.
I wouldn't worry about compacting your trash, but I do recommend getting something with a lid to keep your garbage in (think ammo can).

great!
i think for the trash it might be good for stuff like wrappers and make it easier to stow away for the ride home?

We vacuum pack everything, including our clothes.
We VP and freeze the meats especially.
With clothing, it saves spcce, but more importantly keeps everything dust free until it's time to wear it.

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle.
Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

Fortunately, it's never been a problem, we take a huge plastic bin we use for the dirty clothes hopper. Everything is in it's own individual bag too, which sounds wasteful, but having fresh, dust free clothing to put on after a shower is heaven.

I VP for a couple of reasons:
1) The bag is tough. What can I say, i am a man with minimal patience at times and tend to shove and what not. ATTN: Playa dust. You are not allowed to start consuming my beef jerky before I am.
2) guaranteed no carbonated food from the dry ice.
3) The meat can float all day long in the cooler water, and I don't worry about juices flowing into my cooler water/sprayer water.
4) Portions are pre-made for instant gratification ready for any type of storage environment. Ziplocks at -70C suck.
5) I pre-buy my favorite sandwich from Zoccolis in Santa Cruz and vacuum pack the bread into a manageable size(sucks but SOO worth it).
6) Pre-frozen smoked meats(or whatever) can be dropped into a pan of boiling water while still in the plastic. Easy cleanup pulled pork/tri-tip.
7) I have a love/hate relationship with oxygen.

For clothes, I just use the very largest zip lock bags. You can open them and reseal the rest. Works very well.jkisha wrote:We vacuum pack everything, including our clothes.
I can see that for single portions of food, especially meat, vacuum seal would be great. Baggies DON'T work to keep out water, as in the cooler melt, or the meat juice in, as in nasty, contaminated cooler water and what do you do with it? That is exactly what I would use if I didn't have an ancient motorhome with working gas refrig and freezer.

I found a dollor store waste basket that fit in the cooler.. Keeps the juices where they belong..teardropper wrote:For clothes, I just use the very largest zip lock bags. You can open them and reseal the rest. Works very well.jkisha wrote:We vacuum pack everything, including our clothes.

A vacuum sealer is worth every penny of the expense it takes to buy a good one. Half the fun is finding stuff to vacuum seal when you first get it.
My personal favorite. Miniature colored marshmallows. Throw and handful in the bag and seal it up. You get this pretty awesome abstract blob of pastel colors all swirled and squished together. Cut the bag open and let the air back in, you have a bag of colored marshmallows again.
This can be repeated as often as you like with the same results on the same marshmallows.

Actually, I think you could do the same thing with pompom's, too, and not have to deal with marshmellows. And with a heavy enough book and a zip lock you could do it on the cheap. Of course, my sister says they don't have good ziplocks in the UK.
