Where to shop for food and drink? (never shopped in states)

Post by Gobkin » Fri Jul 19, 2013 5:21 pm

Might sound silly to you friendly Americans but the only store store I know is walmart and I am not sure if that is a good place to go to get food and drink (and booze). What other options should I look into? Preferably stores that are open 24 hours. Thank you.
P.s. what is the latest and earliest time I can buy alcohol in nevada?

In Reno?

SaveMart, they like burners. Here's some good info:

http://civilizedexplorer.pbworks.com/w/ ... 7/24hrReno

You can buy booze 24 hours a day in Nevada.

Winco all the way! They have bins of bulk items that you scoop out as much or as little as you want. It super cheap. Rice, oats, sugar, granola... Pretty much any dry good.

Do a search of ePlaya, as everyone has their favorites.

Also, there's tons of information available through the link in my signature, among which you'd find Preparation and eventually come across the Shopping Areas, so you can organize around what part of Reno you'll be traveling through or staging in.

And if you come through Wyoming look for the drive up liquor stores and beverage windows.
The next morning you will wake up pretty much your old self except that a very unusual 16 hours will have been added to your store of life experience.

Winco is quite good, lowest prices, and the bulk selections are wonderful, as mentioned. You can even get powdered hummus, just add a little water and oil. However, for anyone shopping there, be aware they do NOT take credit cards. Just cash and debit cards. They don't carry everything, but what they do carry is always just about the cheapest in the area.

We have one here, and they have the best and freshest produce.

Trader Joes also has lots of fun stuff that travels well.

BTW, a bit of info if you're not from the U.S. Distances are larger than they appear. Driving from Vegas to Reno is 7 hours of hot dessert hell.

If you're taking the "spooky desert highway" route there is no point in going to Reno.

You can get suplies in Vegas or Fernley.

It's not that hot, usually in the 90s.

Little traffic, I like it.

The walmart in Fernley will have practically everything, plus a bunch of burners socializing and waiting for Gate to open! 8)

Of course I can't support shopping at the Walmart in Fernley, but only as a personal grudge. I needed new tires for our M.V. and while they were happy to sell me the tires, the douche bag service manager refused to install them on the Floe!. Claimed it was a parade float or a trailer, but not a car. I told him I'd drive that bitch in the bay myself, but he refused me  . I bought a floor jack, did the work without a shirt or underpants in front of his customers, and then returned the jack. Hopefully the upskirt haunts him at night.

+1,000 to the info AntiM and Canoe linked. The local resource guide on the main site (compiled by folks in the Reno regional group, thanks guys!) has been incredibly useful for scouting out local resources.

If you follow the links around on the Reno site I linked, there is Fernley info also. There is a SColari's and other options besides WalMart.

I despise WalMart for personal reasons.

Or use a simple google for grocery stores in Fernley. They all stock up for burners.

Scolaris and Walmart are on the same side of town in Fernley. Pretty much across the street from each other. So yeah if you boycott Walmart (yay). Scolaris is right there and you can join in the fun at walfuckers parking lot after shopping

At WinnCo the customer has to bag their purchases, which helps keep prices low. The store supplies the bags.

The Save Mart that is very burner friendly is on Keystone Ave just south of I 80. They'll have 48' trailers full of cases of water and other necessities. The center of the parking lot will be bustling with activity.

Please do not buy a lot of gear and then trash it in a dumpster right after the Burn. But the dumpster at Savemart is a goldmine for dumpster divers the week after. I just think it is such a shame that a "leave no trace" event accrues so much waste that actually could be reused. There were coolers, chairs, stuffed animals, mirrors... lots of stuff that was bought to use for the week and then tossed in the dumpster.

Equally, don't leave your gear at Burning Man with the expectation that somebody else may find use for it.

Donate your stuff to Karma Collectors. They will have a truck at exodus and will then donate your unwanted gear to the homeless in Reno. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Karma-Co ... 5725779899

shopping at the walmart on 2nd street, off hwy 395, benefits the local reno tribe, btw, in tax revenues.
