Gifting - Home Made Butter & Paneer Cheese....

Post by Meat Hunter » Wed Mar 26, 2014 9:33 am

I just finished making a few gifts: 30-1/4 lb. portions of Home Made Butter. And, I also made 20-1/4 lb slices of Paneer cheese.

It is my intention to freeze & vacuum package today and transport to the Playa frozen in a cooler filled with dry ice.

In all probability, I will not have any problem gifting these -- while they last.

Actually, you will. Unless you can prove to the county health department that they were made in a commercial kitchen.

Last year I went to a free breakfast where the camp met me in the street and asked me if I work for any Nevada faction of health inspector. Then they introduced me around, declared that I am a 'friend' of the camp and would I like to eat breakfast with them. It was all to protect them from being accused of serving food without a license. It was delicious. We did become friends and met again later in the week for drinks and swag exchange. I want your cheese and I want your butter. So will everyone else that's close enough to their camp to put it in an ice chest. Thank you for making it. I think it's a great gift.

Oooops...!

Thanks for the Heads-Up regarding the gifting of food stuffs.

I shall leave the butter and cheese at home - except that which I (and those friends dining with me) will be using for our personal needs.

No loss because these quantities are what we normally consume in a 6 to 8 month period.

We had folks who made breakfasts in our village, but they had to relocate back off the street.

I suggest you read up on the food permit, so you know what you can and cannot do with gifting food. Know how to avoid a ticket/being shut down is a good thing.

I'm giving this a nudge to Food & Drink, since that's a better fit.

+1 to what Fishy said. If you'll be gifting or serving food to the public, or your camp kitchen will be preparing food for 125 or more people you will need to obtain a Nevada Health Permit and follow their rules and guidelines regarding preparation and food handling. You can find out more about that here.

Thank you guys for the thoughtful information. The food regulations are very reasonable.

Thank you for helping me keep out of trouble with the Health Department.

I am sure that I can gift other meaningful gift items. A gift of some electricity/lighting/power from my little Honda 2000i generator might make a good gift or at least a good offer of a gift.

For what it's worth, I was posting the link and info as guidance and wasn't intending to put you off of the idea. The health department people we've worked with over the years have been really excellent people (and are long-time burners themselves).
