It doesn't seem hot at all in Gerlach/Reno

Post by psidoer » Mon Aug 31, 2015 5:11 pm

I'm visiting from south Florida where it's 95 degrees in the day and 80 at night. Compared to Florida , this is a vacation. It seems it only gets up to 88 tops. Previously I was panicking about how I was going to stay cool during the day in the rumored 115 degrees by getting an air conditioner or building a swamp cooler. Now all it seems like is that I'm going to have to build shade structure and then I'm good. Is there something im missing?

Yup.
Do your homework.
Temperatures vary from day to day, year to year.
So far, 2015 appears to be a somewhat cooler year, with moderate winds (only up to 60 mph so far).
Had you done your homework, in the week before the Burn, the forecast was roughly a 40% chance of cooler than seasonal for the duration of the burn. So yes, 88F is reasonable, and since it's dry, it doesn't seem as hot as 88F with humidity in Florida.

BUT, watch out for dehydration and playa-condition, both of which can be worse than expected due to altitude. Plus the wind dries you out faster too.
