You see, this is how to get help on eplaya!
There's a problem!
Run around screaming untill you realize what the problem is.
"My balls itch!"
Then you research the problem and try several solutions.
Haveing no success, you then ask for help.
"Someone scratch my balls!"
See how easy that was.

I live on the east coast and want to build a Hexayurt for this year's burn.
Am I crazy to think that I can cut the pieces and pre tape the seams in a Parkin lot a couple of days before going to Black Rock City?
Anyone looking to sell one? I have a new tape.if so private message me please.
Thanks

You, by yourself? No. With one other person, no problem, as long as there isn't too much wind.
Consider a park too. We did a trial setup for our first yurt in a city park; it drew quite a crowd.

I recently read a post somewhere about somebody providing this service on a rental basis. Might have been on one of the Burning Man Facebook pages.loveali wrote:I was thinking more about having someone with expertise "pre-assemble" the yurt and help to put all the pieces in place onsite. As mentioned, I'm willing to pay for materials + labor + transport to the playa.

I saw an earlier post about room dividers that talked about using clothes lines.
I found a different way on appropedia, but I'm having issues seeing how it's fastened to the outside from the pictures. Anyone have any experience with that method?

Re: HexaYurts
Hi all,
Me and my brother are flying from the UK for our first burn and have decided to build a hexayurt. I have some questions:
Are there any absolute no-no's when buying the materials and or building a hexayurt?
How likely is it that two people - one with amazing practical skills the other average at best (me) - going to be able to construct a yurt on the playa (we are going to cut up the materials in san fran before traveling to BM.)? We are committed to doing it anyway.
Obviously we are not bringing the yurt back to the UK - Any ideas for who / what we can give the yurt to after the burn?
How likely is a yurt disaster in high winds?
Has anyone made anything to cool down a yurt? We were thinking of something solar power fan based? Interested to know if anyone has any experience here...
Wish us luck

Re: HexaYurts
I just spent the last weekend building the BFD yurt with my brother and our two spouses. My brother has some advanced wood working tools (he's made some beautiful furniture for his home) that made cutting the insulation boards, and especially the angled edges, much easier. If I were doing it with just my circular saw, or heaven forbid, a knife, it would have been much more challenging. He had also built a scale model (yeah, we're both geeks) that made assembly much easier. Having 4 people really helped with all the edge taping too (that aluminum tape really wants to stick to itself and will not cleanly come off the insulation board once it's on there).
If you're flying in, don't overlook the tape. My brother mail ordered it and from what I understand, 6" bidirectional filament tape, or even 3" for that matter, is not something you're going to find at HD or L's. We also did the off playa pre-assembly so we should be able to unfold the sections and put it up pretty quickly. As we were taping panels together, we kept looking at each other and asking, "Could you imagine doing this on the playa, in the dust and the wind?" We really appreciated the calm, relatively clean environs of his back yard.

Re: HexaYurts
I've never done this and frankly don't like the idea, but it appears that they ran some rope through the conduit, poked a hole in the roof at the corner, fed the rope through the hole and then through what looks like a piece of wood or plastic to help distribute the weight, and then through the washer and tied it off. Looks like they might have done the same at the roof.HurtYurt wrote:I saw an earlier post about room dividers that talked about using clothes lines.

1. Don't skimp on the 6 in bu-filament tape. Use the 6 inch, it's in the original plans. Follow the plan.Welshburner wrote:Hi all,

2. 2 people can put a yurt up no problem. You will need a neighbor or 2 to help put the roof on. Neighbors are usually more than happy to help and putting the roof on doesn't take to long.
3. Don't try to put your yurt up if its breezy. Even little winds can grab a hold of a yurt panel and their hard to control if it does.
4. You can search here for figjams bucket cooler to help cool the yurt. I don't use one but I live in n.nv and am acclimated to the dry heat here. A battery operated fan and a garden sprayer work pretty good at cooling you down.
5. You might try contacting tattoo goddess here on Eplaya. She may be interested in your yurt after the burn.
6. Make sure you use rebar to anchor the yurt to the playa and it should survive the winds just fine.
Enjoy your burn!
Oh my god, it's HUGE!

Once setup? Little to none if you used the correct materials, like the 6" bi-filament tape, and followed the instructions, including anchoring it properly.
You do not need to mitre the edges for joining the panels. 6" tape reaches across the 1" square edged panels just fine; with the 220 lbs. 6" tape, a 4' joint has 650 lbs. of holding strength and the 8' has over 1300.
That bucket cooler is a DIY swamp cooler.
For success, stick to the proven designs and materials.
Most recent recap http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic. ... 50#p947515
You don't need a bucket cooler. You can have a spray bottle and spray up into the air. That will cool the air. Once that moist air gets hot, you need to get it out of the yurt, by the door & a window/vent, assisted by a fan? Once that has brought hot & dry (& dusty) air back into the yurt, you can spray again. Of course the swamp-cooler is much nicer, as it blows cool air in whenever you turn it on, and without the dust or heat of the "by-hand" method.

You do not want any of that crap getting on the playa, blowing into the surrounding desert, on your hands, or in your lungs.

splurged on the 1.5" thick rmax panels, hope that makes a difference. They were delivered yesterday, time to get my but in gear. I bought 13 panels but I think I'm going to stick with the tried and true h12 semi-folding design. Maybe I can use the leftover panel to make a baffle box for my generator

Re: HexaYurts
Oh yeah Lucky - this stuff is just like using a big version of foam core board - it is really easy to build with. I've used it for exactly that and many other things that required insulating.
I don't think I would use it as a generator baffle as I think it would trap the heat and exhaust from a running genny. Maybe could engineer around that by leaving a gap at the bottom?

Re: HexaYurts
Hope you have the 6" wide tape. The gaps on the joints will be 1.5" now too, instead of 1", so the amount of tape holding on the panel surface will be slightly less. Doesn't matter for 6" wide tape (with the 1.5" gap, you can still be offset 1/2" without a significant reduction in holding strength, but I wouldn't want more than that), but it's starting to matter for 4" wide tape.BurnerBunny wrote:splurged on the 1.5" thick rmax panels, hope that makes a difference....

Hi guys! Been lurking on this thread for about a year now.
Will a Honda eu2000i power a 5,000 BTU AC on the playa (altitude + heat)? What about 6k/8k BTU?
I need to buy both an AC and a generator. I usually go overkill with these kinds of things, but we all know generators are pricy. Looking for a nice sweetspot where our 166sqf H15 won't have trouble getting down to a nice temp, and where our generator will be just fine startup up and staying on while powering it and a few other low-resource gadgets (LED rope). I'd consider getting a lower-priced generator as well if I was confident it'd power a 5k/6k BTU AC. Thanks!

Re: HexaYurts
What's the wattage requirement of the AC unit? I don't know much about the generator you mentioned, but I'm assuming it's a 2000 watt generator. (Which usually means something like 2000 watts startup and continuous of something less like 1800 watts--check the manual. So if the AC unit is under 1000 watts, you'll be good to go, with a bit to spare.

Re: HexaYurts
I didn't see the wattage there. Usually it's listed on the box or the chord. But I will tell you that those are bigger (more costly) than you need. Go to home depot and buy one of their $99.00 AC units and you'll be all set. I think they pull about 400-450 watts. That's what we use and it's on it's third or fourth year now. And it actually will make the yurt uncomfortably cold if you run it on high.
And don't try to cover it or shield it from the dust or it will overheat and trip the fuse.

Re: HexaYurts
Yup. What JK said.
For the win you can actually power two el-cheapo deluxo AC units in the 5K btu range with a 10.x Energy Star rating from a single EU2000i if you turn the "Eco-mode" switch off. Just stagger them on the initial startup so both compressors dont slug it out during a simultaneous startup. You can run one and start one at the same time, but you usually can't start both at once. Once they are running, the odds of both trying to start their compressors at once are pretty slim.
I strongly suggest getting a mechanical (non-digital) unit. Not only are they cheaper, they are less prone to surge-induced glitches. They are much better behaved on generator power than their digital cousins.
Definitely get the smallest unit BTU-wise you can find. 5000 btu is overkill in a properly assembled yurt. Or go with a FIGJAM evaporative cooler and you could power an entire neighborhood of yurts with one little Honda!

Re: HexaYurts
GreyCoyote have you actually powered two on one 2000w geni at Burning Man? The only reason I ask is that the first year we tried the AC we connected it to a 1200w geni. Even though the AC pulled less than 500 watts, at that elevation it would only run about 3 minutes before it blew the fuse on the geni. Worked just fine when we tested in in Los Angeles.
