Hm...the problem is they don't seem to have much hold when pulled mostly upwards. Which with just about any shade, especially tarps or 80+% shade cloth, you'll have a pretty good amount of upwards pull and will probably rip these right out.
Get 1/2" x 18" or longer lags and ratchet straps. If you want to ratchet straight down, I'd get 22" or longer, maybe even going up to 5/8". If you're doing the X criss-cross you can get away with 1/2"x14 or 1/2"x16" I'd say.
If all you want is posts for hammocks, not to hold down your shade, if they go down ~24" I'd say it'll probably be fine, as long as it's not super thin (18 awg or thinner) metal, and ideally some kind of X or cross to provide hold in multiple directions. That's actually a pretty solid idea, to create a hammock stand on the Playa. Challenge is you still have to deal with relatively big and bulky 4x4s.
