Mounting a chair on top of a dome?

Post by Dork » Tue Aug 01, 2006 9:16 pm

I've been tasked with figuring out how to mount a chair on top of our 21 foot 4v dome. I was thinking of using a car seat since I'll have a couple of them with me anyway and because they have those nice mounts at the bottom.

Any suggestions for reliable ways to do this without taking up too much cargo space?

Also, the dome is currently in another state so I have to do this off of measurements.

Bring a chunk of thick plywood large enough to cover the top void on the dome. Use u-bolts to fix the plywood to the dome, and then bolt through the bottom of the car seat mounting pad into the plywood?

Not quite... The dome comes to a point. Cut a circle in said thick plywood a bit wider than the seat is. Cut the ply into a circle. Drill 5 holes evenly around the rim. Build a small frame so the seat sits on it (bolt it down) and clears the point of the dome poking through the enter hole. Strap plywood down to dome via the holes and the top 5 point of the dome.

Hmmm... won't that put the stress on the middle of the struts? Or are the angles small enough on the top pentagon that it doesn't make a difference?

Find a one-legged bar stool.

Only if the hole were so big that the edges hit in the middle of the struts. I Imagen that the hole edges will hit close enough to the vertex that the load won't be an issue. Plus you'd be spreading the load evenly over all 5 struts, so the load per strut will be quite small. :)
