Charcoal grill

Post by pbmaniac2000 » Thu Aug 03, 2006 12:36 pm

I was wondering how many people have used one on the playa and some of the problems with it. I would not be using it every day, but some brats or steaks on the grill a time or two would really hit the spot. Any suggestions?

A charcol BBQ is a fine thing to do out there. Have a cover for when the wind kicks up, and those round tin popcorn cans are great for dumping in ashes, even if they are not completely out. I can get the tins at the Salvation Army store for less then a dollar.

Louise and I have brought our little tabe top grill for years. We put it on the playa and cook burgers. It's a Weber, so we can shut the vent holes and kill the fire, then put it back in the van till we use it next. After it's cooled after the last use, we put it in a big garbage bag and stow it in the van till we get home and empty the ashes and clean the grill.

I'm antsy about carrying lighter fluid, so we get those bricks of solid fuel. If we roll the van, I'd rather have them spill than the fluid.

We've had no problem with spills of ashes or grease; your mileage will vary. As blyslv points out, covers are good - I consider one necessary on the playa; your mileage will vary.

I'm bringing one. It's a three-chambre dutch oven with a grill and a bake chambre, more like a mini Franklin stove.

I'm also bringing a thick leather pad and some terracotta tiles to set it on.

Thanks for the popcorn tin suggestion, blslv! Image

I been eating out of cans but seeing your post is making me rethink.
I might bring one of those cheap propane grills, seems like the business of hot coals and ash might be too much work.
By god I can smell the hot brats already!

Our camp grills every night. We brought charcoal for a couple of years, but because of our BBQing volume, we now go gas. This solves the messy clean-up problem. Not that we're worried about staying clean on the playa, but we're trying to not turn the ash into moop (even though no one would probably notice). Plus you have to wait for the grill to heat up.

In reality, we reheat. We pre-smoke all kinds of things, shrink wrap 'em, freeze them, and reheat on the gas grill. More prep work, less work on the playa.

I used a charcoal grill my first year, and it was fine, but I'd rather not have to worry about the ash so I switched to propane. I love my little $20 propane grill!
