shade for one?

Post by harlequinx » Wed Aug 23, 2006 8:19 am

Hey- so this will be my first time at the event. I'm pretty much going solo and I am looking for ideas on how to make a small shade structure for myself. I feel as though it's not neccessary to have one since i will be camping by myself for the most part, but it still might be nice to have a cool place to lay down for awhile or to keep my cooler. Any ideas on the best method?

Shade is a non-negotiable, it's really as necessary as water. Your tent will be like a oven unless you park it under shade. It has to stay up if it gets windy, and maybe REALLY windy. I use a 10x10 carport from Costco, very cheap and packs to a small size i can fit in a small car. I use 3 foot rebar pounded straight in and duct taped to the legs.

I'll join in that. For one person, something comparable to a parawing; here we are with ours at a Burn:

Note that our poles were collapsed by the wind, though. You can buy one or make your own. Throw a rug under it, and you're good to go.

I really think you need a shade.

You Driving? Have a roof rack? That can be the start of a shelter. You got one wall and anchor points.

Actually, that's more or less what Louise and I did our first trip - we rented a commercial van, slammed the door shut on a piece of fabric, then staked the other end down on the playa for our shade.

It didn't work real well, but it worked.

thanks for the ideas...I looked for one of those parawings, but they're a little out my price range at this point.
I think I figured something out though...I just hope it can handle the wind.
