Given the theme, you could get one of those camo nets and cover it in cloth leaves and flowers, turn it into a forest.
Sure, it's a lot of work, just whip out the scissors and wrist braces. You have ten months, try for a monthly quota of leaves and break it down into weekly goals. Get friend and family over and have a leaf-cutting party.

Get some white tarps or old billboard vinyls, then paint 'em!
You could either paint them in advance and then just hang them on the sides once you arrive, or you could turn the vehicle into a canvas on the playa, bring out the paints (as well as dropcloths to protect the playa beneath) and invite people to turn your vehicle into art.

I like the camo net idea..Not sure how to attach flowers and leaves though and sounds like they could blow around or off.....
Tagging ain't art to me ............
I like the Tarp/Vinyl idea..... But paint what on it or make it look like what ? What could a Motorhome be made to look like with technical skills but very little artistic skills ? I looked at it dozens of times and the only idea that came to mind was turning it into a giant dustbuster portable vac....but then I thought the idea sucked...(bad pun) .......If I only had an imagination....
Thanks !

Sew 'em on. If you get strong enough thread (try taxidermy supply houses) you'll only need to do a couple stitches per leaf.chup wrote:I like the camo net idea..Not sure how to attach flowers and leaves though and sounds like they could blow around or off.....
Yeah, lots of handwork. That's why I suggested breaking out the wrist supporters.

What's the RV look like now? Maybe paint it up as a giant box of kitchen matches? (If it is box-like.) Or maybe a parody of the paint scheme of that RV rental outfit which about half of all RVing Burners seem to use? (I can't think of the name right now-- I've been that way with names all day for some reason.)
Hmmm. Could you post a picture of the vehicle as it is now? That might suggest a few more ideas.

You can make faux bamboo out of pvc pipe. Take your pipe and a hot glue gun, make the "knuckles" with stripes of glue, and paint bamboo-coloured. You can even apply stain around the glue knuckles.
Or you can just source some bamboo, cut it to length, split it lengthwise, embed it in Bondo on the camper body and remake the lil' grass shack where humuhumunukunukuapua'a go swimmin' by.

Tiki-Tiki theme...huh ? Interesting !!!.... I have an unlimited supply of real bamboo here........It grows so damn fast you cant even make a dent in harvesting it....
I will go get some and see if I can make it work for me...
As for providing entertainment to others...
Question.. Has anyone else done a BurningMan version of a putt putt golf course or a croquet course theme that you all recall ?
Thanks for all the suggestions so far and please look at the RV picture and tell me what you see it being made into......No idea is to weird to at least get me thinking about possibilities...
Thanks again....

Both minigolf and croquet have been done before....but NOT with YOUR personal, distinctive touches. Don't let THAT stop you! The only part of making a puttputt course that I found challenging was collecting the putters- And that just took some trips to local thrift stores and yard sales. I'd suggest avoiding GIANT crocquet, like some folks set up out by the fence the other year, since those big goddamned balls escape downwind like nobody's business.
How's the roof on your RV? If you started in the Spring, you could have a nice coat of moss to lay on by August. Put down plastic, then burlap, and add "moss milk" made by breaking up moss into expired milk in a blender. (This technique works very well for starting moss on rocks, too.) You just might have to water it while you're out in the Dusty. You could grow rooftop grass, too.

Chup — You have bamboo? UTILIZE IT!!! Bamboo is a wonderful building material. You can even stain it different colours because the outer shell is silica: glass! There's instructions to make domes out of it on the DesertDomes site. Tiki bar, shade zocolo, even dance floor. You could do a whole camp of bamboo structures. If I had access to a bamboo forest I would SO prey on it with a free and open conscience and sleep the sleep of the just.
Just remove the leaves. They're horrendously MOOPy.

Yeah, no joke. We have a local character who has 160 kinds of bamboo on the seven acres surrounding his house. He regularly goes in search of new varieties to plant. He said that when he dies, he wants the neighbours to know about it by the weird smell and responding crew to have to cut him out of his house, like Sleeping Beauty in the midst of the thorn hedge.
Bamboo is the plant equivalent of rabbits, it reproduces prolifically because its existence on this planet can be summed up in one concept: TO BE PREYED UPON.

Hey! Do a bamboo forest theme, and diguise the RV as a giant panda bear sleeping in the middle!
(I remember the van from the movie Dumb and Dumber-- a giant sheep dog-- so I think a panda bear would be doable.)

I just visualized that scene in "My Neighbour Totoro" where Mei finds Totoro asleep in the forest, curls up on his chest and falls asleep in his fur.
Bamboo forest would be cool but MOOPy.

I'm not familar with that movie (and actually don't really know much about bamboo forests)-- would there be some way to do one and keep it from being MOOP-y? (If Chup's got an unlimited supply of bamboo a forest was the best idea I could come up with at the time!)
Hmm. Maybe a cage instead? That way the RV could be a panda bear on display in a zoo...?

I am not familiar with My Neighbour Totoro, but I did check it out online,
You all are over estimating my artistic ability...Since it will be just me and I have to drive 2800 miles to get there, I have to make sure it will travel well also. I like the Bamboo Cage idea. I think I could make that myself and I could keep it at 8ft lengths to store in the compartments for the trip. I will leave the Bamboo leaves at home.
My Dad planted some Bamboo at their house in 1964 near the creek and it has been a constant battle to keep it in check. Nothing would make my Mom happier then if I went over there with a chainsaw and took a few hundred of them down.....It grows remarkably well in the Mid-Atlantic states if there is water nearby. The Only difference between Rabbits and Bamboo is the Taste !
Thanks everyone for the ideas and keep them coming....

/phoelixdcatt wrote:chup, i have same problem as you. i also have wild bamboo (kinda small) and wild grape vines (very large,&prolific) that i have been brooding about since '04. Perfect for this years theme, but still at a loss. calloused hands, weak imagination!
Reading more about The Green Man.. I found there are three types.. The Blood Sucker type has "grape vines" coming out all over the head. Hit you search machine and have some fun.
Thanks for all the ideas and support so far... Keep it coming....
Also it is good to know that I am not the only creatively challanged person out there...And I am glad this thread may be helping others
with my same "limitations" come up with an idea...
Why is the creative part ALWAYS so damn hard. ??? ...Building it will be a cakewalk !
Thanks

phoelixdcat, if you need to unload any grapevines I'll take 'em. I need to make three grapevine wreathes this year.
Chup — it's the exact opposite for me. To me, the brainstorm/creative process is the most fun and getting down to brass tacks and makin' what I've dreamt up is the challenge. I've already scrapped three brainstormed projects in the interest of not spreading myself too thin.
