dividing financial responsability

Post by alienfry » Wed Nov 19, 2003 8:28 am

i have some questions for all of you:

1. how much money did you contribute to your camp (not including any personal expenses)?

2. what's a fair amount to ask for?

3. how/when was the money collected?

the reason i'm asking issss because i have a big idea for my camp this year and it'll cost a bit. i'd like to offer 2 options to my friends who camp with us: an option that's more costly per person, but they'll have some AWESOME living quarters; and an option that's less costly, and they'll just use their tents to sleep in.

thoughts? feedback?

additional info: i want to build a hotel with rooms for my campmates to sleep in. it's going to be awesome, but if i want it to be SAFE i'll need to do it right and buy quality supplies from professionals.

We covered the cost of our camp ( infinite temple of chaos) with grants from the burning man foundation and by throwing parties, everyone was expected to contribute labor to the fundraising efforts and the construction of the camp, and bring their own supplies. On the other hand, a couple I know were in the Sol to Sol camp and they contributed something like $200 or $300 for a camping spot, a meal plan, and junk like that. I personaly would never join a camp that was that structured, particularly since I was fine spending under $50 on food and supplies (and I had plenty to gift to boot), and enjoyed helping raise money for our camp and building stuff. but a friend of mine that was in my camp was so impressed with Sol to SOl's system that he wants to camp with them next year or set up a symilar system himself, so it really depends on the people involved.
I took the road less traveled, and now I would like to go back and find the paved one.

Yeah the people involved. If you ask for X amount and they pay it, it was not too much, if they balk, it was too much.

I would be concerned about setting-up a tiered system for sleeping arrangments. It seems like it might be a recipie for resentment and bitterness.

Last year we had four principals invovled, and then some other really cool folks showed up and contributed as well. We all contributed what we felt comfortable contributing for our Gender Blender Bar. I know how much I put in (I keep getting the fucking bills) and have no idea what everybody else put in. It took a lot of trust but it worked out well.

Our plan so far is $15 a day for food and water, plus a flat fee of $150 for supplies. We want to buy a generator this year plus other structural stuff. Last year everybody chipped in $200. That worked but was a bit unfair since, some people didn't show up until wednesday.

We will have a fund raiser or two to lower these fees, but it's difficult to get everybody involved. A fund raiser will mostly be orginized by me, to lower the cost for them. Oh well, all in the spirit of giving right?
