Awning ideas for SUV needed

Post by commander » Sun Aug 24, 2008 9:43 am

Heading out in my SUV and trying to figure out a way to put up a simple awning. How the @#$ can you nicely get a few poles up to hang a shade fabric on it? Or other shade suggestions.

See you on the Playa!

Due to the wind out there, I wouldn't recommend attaching anything to your SUV -- the wind will cause whatever you attached to rub against your vehicle.

What I would do if I were you is get a carport to go next to your SUV instead. They're not that expensive if you amortize the cost over however many years you're going to use it.

Here's what I'm talking about: http://www.nulime.com/Canopy-Carport-10 ... ls/p167705

Here's another thread where this is discussed: http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?t=24012
It's what you make it.

Our first trip, we had a fabric awining. We slammed the side doors shut on in and staked the other end directly to the ground. Kinda not high enough, but it worked. The fabric was not abrasive and did no damage to the paint, but I'd worry about that particular fabric tearing in the winds we had out their this year.

I built a structure from 3/4" pipes I bought in HomeDepot.
It worked just fine :) Survived high winds with no problems.
Provided dense shade over my small truck and a sitting area.
Took me less than 1 hr to assemble / disassemble.
I'm going to do the same next year.

And I was able to return all the pipes back to HomeDepot when
I got back home ;)

Let me know if you are interested in details - i can email you pics and building instructions.

Gotten love Romeo Freakenstein's stencils. I kept them, but they got gummed up with the latex paint eventually. Genius did a great job with the shirts!
