Re: HexaYurts
It it's four sided it technically and by definition would not be a yurt any longer. It would be a box with a roof. Yurts by design need to be circular (6 sides fulfills this requirement) otherwise the tension band that both defines the design and makes it work, would not be functional.

Re: HexaYurts
Hi Burner Community!
I'm planning on building my first hexayurt for the playa this year and I was wondering if there were any experienced LA based Hexayurt builders that would be willing to help? I'd totally feed you, provide refreshments, etc. I'm thinking about building in June/July depending on availability.
Please respond and let me know!
Tons of high fives and brownie points will be rewarded.

Re: HexaYurts
I am planning on going to pick these boards up in a couple hours.
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Thermasheath ... dMJQeDjY20
They are the 1" "R-Max Thermasheath 3R-5.9 1 in. 4 ft. x 8 ft. Foam Insulation"
I can not find out if they are only 1 side of reflective material though...If it has only one shiny side will it still be workable?
Sorry but I have been confused by the hours of reading this thread and research about "what to buy"
Cheers

Re: HexaYurts
Just to complete the picture.. yes, the boards only have to be shiny/reflective on one side, which becomes the outside of your yurt. Two sided is fine too. Perhaps a scientifically minded burner would be able to say whether dual sided reflectivity adds additional effect for a yurt, though I'm guessing if so it would be marginal. I suppose it would assist with your interior lighting. Good luck with your yurt MrTetrisMrTetris wrote:

Re: HexaYurts
I swear I may have read a passing comment about 3/4" panels somewhere in the midst of this thread, but apparently my search abilities are not up to snuff. Wondering if anyone can weigh in?
We’re building three 6’ stretch yurts of the semi-folding variety. (Camp danger or coreyfro haven’t decided yet). Our tape has arrived so the last piece of the puzzle is the panels.
1” Iko Enerfoil boards are the standard in Canada. $27.30 each with tax
BUT I see today that 3/4" panels are on sale for $12.60.
On the appropedia page it says that the 6’ yurt & stretch are more forgiving…I was wondering if I may be able to get away with using 3/4” panels for the roof sections? I *think* that someone may have done so or mentioned some such thing in this thread?
In the end, it’s not that much savings – but we would be glad to use that additional $130 toward gas as we’re looking at 3,100 miles roundtrip!
Also – a million thanks to all of you who have taken the time to post your yurt experiences, it has been ever so helpful! <3

Re: HexaYurts
Yeah, but 3100 miles is an awful long distance to go only to build a structure that doesn't withstand the wind.
Re: HexaYurts
And I don't know if that brand has been tested on-playa yet.
If you decide to go with the 3/4 Iko, if you have extra bi-filament tape:
after you've cut your panels and sealed the edges with aluminum foil tape, one way of adding some strength is to run an "X" on the inside surface with bi-filament tape. For the sides (and long roof panels on a stretch), run it from corner to corner. For the triangles: from each corner to the middle of the opposite side. Helps take inward bending loads. Do not know if it would be enough to prevent the panel from snapping from a really strong wind.
If the wind decides to blow, it's the 1" panels with the bi-filament power-band that's tried & true.
All bets are off for the door, windows or vents.
It's a big price difference, but look at it as assurance towards having a hexayurt for the week. Or bring a tent too.

I agree with Trillo. I wouldn't use anything other than 1" panels.

Re: HexaYurts
voices of total reason - thanks trilobyte, Canoe and jkisha. I'll stick with what works. Trying to half ass the roof to save a few bucks doesn't seem prudent if it hasn't been tried before. (Tho I swear somewhere in this thread someone did in years past...just can't find it).
As for the brand, Canoe, it has been tested on playa for many a year by other Canadians. We can't get the other stuff up here! (at least not in my neck of the woods)

Re: HexaYurts
I've seen a lot of yurt ideas and innovations "tested" on the playa. For some, the results of those tests are quite subjective. And some years, the weather is good with little wind. Testing in those years would give a false sense of security.

Re: HexaYurts
Wouldn't that include every single year that hexayurts have been on the playa? I am planning to build one, but will be shielding it as well as possible with my car and trailer. It does seem that a tent squashed by an airborne EZ-Up or wandering drunk is still a tent after some patching, but a hexayurt with one panel cracked in half no longer has structural integrity.

Re: HexaYurts
You know, that's about the only thing I worried about with our yurt. Though the last couple of years we had a two room Yurt, so that sort of eased the worry some. And I think next year we will be adding a third. Always good to have a fall back plan.

Anyone have any on playa experience with the little 4 sided yurt. I'm building the traditional but my son and his girl are going with the 4 sided. Any tips/info is greatly appreciated.

Oh I might do this. Anything to over-engineer our hexayurt a little bit more.Canoe wrote:one way of adding some strength is to run an "X" on the inside surface with bi-filament tape. I don't know math/physics enough to know the answer to this next question though - is there a similar way that the roof triangle pieces may be strengthened ?

Hello Friends!
Fascinating convo ... I was wondering, as I am flying in from Alberta, Canada (to Reno), if anyone can help me with building a yurt onsite. I am camping with Sacred Spaces Village (its my second burn). I have a way to get it off the playa. Any help or direction you could offer would be greatly appreciated! Its for 1 (maybe 2).

Note: You should NOT cut the panels on the playa, even if you seal the edges with the foil tape right away. The fibres are terrible MOOP, blowing across the playa and out into the desert.loveali wrote:... and help me with building a yurt onsite. ...
