RV radiant barrier results...

Post by Mosin » Sun Sep 21, 2008 12:01 am

As discussed before the burn in the below thread, we pieced together a radiant barrier for Pandora (our beloved 26' Winny) out of reflectix and solar shield scrim to try to limit the amount of time we had to use the genny/ACs during the day, which is when we do most of our sleeping...
( http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?t=25105 ) I said I would report back with the results so...

To use technical terminology, the shield fucking kicked ass. It kept the rv cool inside until around noon, whereas without the shield we would usually have had to kick on the genny/ACs at around 9 AM. Saving ~3 hrs/day on our old Onan (@ ~1hr per gallon full bore) = saving ~30 gallons of gas over the 10 days = not running out of gas = epic comfort the entire time and 30 hrs. less hours of generator/fumes/noise for our neighbors.

Adjustments/upgrades for '09:
1) Solar shield only. We used a combination of bubble-style Reflectix/4x25ft (x2) and Solar Shield radiant barrier foil (4x125ft). The bubble style reflectix was unnecessary... just extra weight and like 5x more bulk in and out...next time we'll go with two rolls of solar shield (that is, 2 @ 4x125 ft) which rolls back up and stows nicely.
2) More bungee cords and reflectix tape. We had one 50 ft bungee cord, 24 8 footers, 4 25-foot cargo tie downs, and an assortment of shorter bungee cords. Next time another 12 8 footers (for a total of 36 in the matrix) will prevent my having to physically lay on top of the roof/scrim during the peak of storms to keep the barrier from tearing and/or blowing off. We ran out of reflectix tape and had to go with duct tape, so we'll double the reflectix tape supply to 10 rolls (25 ft ea).
3) Protective sheets or blanket/s. The solar shield left light-yet-ugly marks on the front, sides and rear where it was moving back and forth in the wind... a total pain in the ass to wax off... wax on, wax off... wax on, wax off. This is the only excercise I get, so maybe I should just go barebck with the solar shield again in '09 (!) but to avoid ugly aluminum-lookin scratches on yer rigs--should you give a shit about the aesthetics-- put something (eg. old sheets and/or blankets) between the paint and the scrim.
4) Next time we'll use extra to cover the passenger side, which should add even more radiant insulation...

On a related note, should you be thinking about restoring a classic/used RV for the burn, this is what you will sound like within two weeks... my hero, Jack Rebney:
