Camping site assignments

Post by timbudtwo » Fri Feb 06, 2009 4:53 pm

I am trying to figure out if there is some kind of map, or place that I go to to sign up for a camp site assignment.

Thanks

You camp where you want, unless it si reserved. Unless you have prearranged a campsite - your in the camp anywhere section.

read the survval guide, and when you get through the checkpoints coming in they will give you all the direction you need and a current 2009 map.

I thought all those little blue shacks were reserved for first-timers?

I was just told by my friend that I will need to get a reservation of some kind. I figured that was only for organized camps, but he made me want to ask.

Only if you want one of the reserved RV pads with full hookups.

those have all been taken by a bunch of Germans. Something about UberDuck, i dont know, but i do know they paid in Kruggerands and Diamonds, so it's all good.

first come, first serve, bring easily liquified currency, like Gold, Viagara, or Cocaine for those primo placement spots.

Larry is bearish on American Currency these days.

Sadly for 09, camping has been discontinued. All participants are required to stay at Bruno's. Due to the small number of rooms, participants are encouraged to stack themselves in the rooms cord style. Transportation to and from the playa will be handled by the Ethiopian Taxi Comp. in hopes that Exodus becomes more entertaining. :P
Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

Timbudtwo, Now that some of the "usual suspects" have had their fun with you, here is how you find out this sort of thing: Go to the main Burning Man web site (click on the logo in the upper left of this page), Click on First-timer Guide (or words to that effect), Maps, Black Rock City Map (this from memory -- you can find it). Soon, you will find this: http://www.burningman.com/preparation/m ... index.html

All camping is in the horse shoe shaped grid, except that the vertical saddle shaped area outside the horse shoe on the right is Walk In Camping (no motor vehicles at all). The blue areas in the grid are reserved. The white are open camping.

Invest some time on the web site. There is TONS of information -- and all free of the well-meant humor on this forum. The Open Camping is spelled out in plain English somewhere near that map.

This cannot be emphasized enough; practically ALL the information a "virgin" needs is on the official web site. (And those who are not sufficiently "committed to the cause" to study that information in depth, are not ready to become Burning Man Participants (my personal opinion)).

Elliot, Thanks for the directions. It is also my personal opinion that you can spend hours of time on the official website, and really not find everything (or miss a lot of detail.) I'm speaking from experience.

And I appreciated the humor, especially about the people sleeping in cords :D:D

To get an idea which areas are open for camping and which are reserved for theme camps, check out the placement map http://www.burningman.com/media/doc/pre ... entmap.pdf.

Its not totally accurate, as things get changed last minute on the playa, but it'll give you a pretty good idea which areas are open and which are not. The shaded areas are reserved for theme camps and stuff. The white areas (in the circle) are first come first serve.

If you are from nothing but city,
have never been camping or have never had to stay at some relatives house for an extended amount of time on an uncomfortable couch,
you should not bother reading the first timer's guide and you shouldn't go,
no matter what you really think.( personal opinion)

and Elliot can be one of the usual supects when he 's not trying so hard to be a nice guy.

my other eye is killing me !!!

Simon, what in the hell did you do to my other eye before you borrowed it to that frekkin' cyclops ?

I thought most of this was meant in good humor, but after oneeyed's last post, im pretty sure I taste some bitterness. I already have my ticket, and I'm not going to be talked out of going.

Thank you for those that helped me out, I appreciate it. I understand that burning man is not a novice camping event. I do not call myself a professional camper by any means, but somewhat seasoned. I am not going to be some spectator coming to ruin your party and mooch.

If I misconstrued your remark oneeyed, my apologies.

Come On !!, I said in my personal opinion just like Eliot did !!!

But Hey, if you consider yourself a "seasoned" camper, then you passed one of my 3 requirements.

You don't have to worry about bears while camping at Burning Man...at least not the type that will kill you in your sleep.

if you are coming by yourself, bring extra water, and lots of extra booze and drugs, they will both make it all better if you are down.

and be careful when sleeping in cords, for someone is waiting for everyone in the stack to fall asleep, and that someone has a big book of matches.

Take note, newbies! Write that on your backward on your foreheads so it's the first thing you read - in the bathroom mirror - every morning between now and September.

Yes it would. I'm using camel humps to carry it around in smaller quantities :D

back to the OP, Timbudtwo, I think getting a sense of how you find a place to camp is actually pretty confusing. My first year I read everything eleventeen times and I still didn't really have a good mental image of how the camp siting works. Do I just park somewhere and camp? Do I have to haul gear from car to camp? How does it WORK?

It's easy. Seriously. You just drive (slowly!) around until you see an open spot big enough for you and whoever you're with. The farther out from center the easier it is. Check the map for theme camp placement before you go, as previously suggested.

Every year there are a lot of versions of this question posted on eplaya.

Excellent. Good, exactly what I needed to hear. I wonder when the updated theme camp list will be on, since the one that is up is 2008.
