Post by ok_burner » Sun Jun 07, 2009 6:56 pm

last year at the burn we used sand stakes and they seemed to do okay.. but the wind was pretty calm last year.. anyone ever had problems with these?

i suppose i could always bring some rebar just in case something happens

The wind was CALM last year? You must not have been there Monday.

Sand stakes will most likely work better than rebar every time. I have military ones that are 12" or 18" long. Angle is crucial.

Or the Sunday before! The guys were trying to set camp and the winds tore the carport covers out of their hands repeatedly. We finally got things up completely on Tuesday.

Hey ok_burner. The reason that everyone uses rebar is that it works. It's time tested and proven that it's the best to stand up to the conditions on the playa. Be overprepared. You'll feel shitty if that "just in case something happens" happens. If your shelter damages a person, vehicle, or just plain disappears off the radar you'll probably wish you had done more.

10" miltary stakes with work for you, and you won't have to deal
with the weight, and possible injury to others. They work fine,
but unless you are staking down something VERY heavy, they
(rebar) is not necessary.

the winds were calm & the weather amazing Last year- except for Monday & Saturday...

Don't camp on the 9:00 side of the Playa if you don't use rebar!

Is the green stake on the top a sand stake? It's 12" long, aluminum, and about 2" wide. A bunch of these came with the army surplus poles I bought for our shade thing, and I've been wondering if they would be good enough to stake down our 10x12x5' inflatable slug (don't ask, just think of the Hudsucker Proxy: "You know, for kids.") and the in-laws tent?
