Best compact easy transport wind worthy shade structure?

Post by VerbenaMaya » Tue May 25, 2004 9:00 am

Hey folks, due to time restrictions I intend on flying in from NC. I have read about shipping stuff out but being that its my first burn and am going solo am very worried about doing so. I would really like to have what I need with me and just worry about the airline losing my stuff, so I thought I would pick your brains for wonderful suggestions. I would like to build a small shade structure/canopy enclosure deal that I can maybe pack in one case (maybe 25x25x12, weight less than 70lbs). I just need space enough for me and my meager amount of stuff, and to eat/hide from sun/sleep comfy in. Shouldnt be too difficult for one chick to put together on the playa, able to survive wind etc. Maybe 10x10 or 10x20 space would be enough. I have access to a home workshop and decent skills, so not afraid to spend some time doing design & construction. Also already have silver tarping for top coverage, and a normal (non-playa) 7'6"x7' 2-man tent. I just need some ideas that do not revolve around 10 foot poles and can be made with 2ft pipe lengths (maybe EMT?), or maybe some kind of sturdy telescoping action. Dome, Tipi, Other? Any suggestions, much appreciated, thanks!!!

A parasol.

Or try to find wherever they hid the eplaya "Structures" topic area.

How are you getting from Reno to the Playa? Can you make all of the fittings at home then stop by Home Despot for the poles after you arrive?

If you don't want to do this, the only thing I can think of would be to use all of the same diameter pipes and either make tight-fitting sleeves that connect each piece together or use a tailpipe expander to widen one end of each pole so that the other one fits inside it. The same way tent poles fit together. 1" EMT or so would probabaly do it with a setup similar to the one Black Rock Hardware sells.

Is 25x25x12 the max size for the airline? I've seen people flying with stuff much larger.

When designing, keep in mind that you'll want the shade to go almost all the way to the ground on the sunrise side if you want to sleep later than 9am.

VerbenaMaya~

My suggestion would be to just bring your tent...that'll be good for shelter and for storing your belongings. Instead of dragging tons of baggage across the country, travel light. Instead of taking the time to erect something grand to dwell in, go around and greet your neighbors that may have had a team of people to erect a comfortable chill space. Just bring extra food, drinks, sweat, etc. to share. And you'll be welcome anywhere!

Being your first burn...travel light and soak up the fun and ideas for your next one. Of course be self -contained, but take advantage of your solo-mobility!! Meet everyone and enjoy!

Thanks. I am sort of brainstorming options, looking at everything possible, gathering ideas. I think the structures thread is now part of the 2003 tips& tricks grab-bag, dont know, but there was some good stuff in there.

Hopefully doing Rideshare from Reno to Playa, another reason I want to go light to not be a burden on somebody else gear wise. Hadn't thought about buying the poles in Reno and just built with standard size fittings. Surely I could gift them at weeks end. Do alot of people do that, curious about if they ever run out of stock? I guess I am just nervous and want to be as prepared as possible...

What I have read says they allow 62" for each piece (calculated lenght+width+height ), and you can check 2-3 depending on airline, but you can pay extra for up to 118" in size and/or up to 100lbs. I weight like 110 so will not be making something I cant carry or manipulate to check in.

I think I might try working with some designs with the expanded ends. I also have big 3foot+ tie down screw things w/eyebolt type ends that we use to keep metal sheds and outdoor buildings from flying off in hurricane season, and a backyard that looks like a junkyard, plenty o pipe to play with. I can take some test structures to the outerbanks here on a good gusty day and see how they hold up. If not worthy, I can switch to pole design and get when I get in Reno. All advice much appreciated..

...providing that you can get lumber OUT there in the first place, you could pick up shade materials close to BRC and burn at week's end. (The WOOD, I mean!)

Hey ReleaseMe,

I havent really been too creative since I finished design school years ago, so designing something is just a personal thing I want to do. Small, Simple & Light is my preference, saving grande for later maybe. A small me space would be good if I need somewhere to adjust for a moment, and it would make me feel comfortable in fulfilling the self-reliance theme. But its good to know if I end up with my shade structure wind-trashed in a garbage bag ready to pack out, and me tired from retrieving it , I wont be out of luck for the rest of the week. I do intend to enjoy meeting people, and hopefully not spending much time in my own space, just want to have it if I need it.

Hey, I'm all for it!

I live in Reno, so if you need a hand logistically let me know!

I'm not very creative so I have to be just extra nice!

You can always greyhound your gear to Reno and pick it up when you get there. It's fairly inexpensive.

The structure I built for last year was very light and compact. It could easily be place in a small carry bag and checked onto a plane. Over all it provided 12' x 20' or so of shade. It was also cheap and easy to build.

It might give you some ideas.

If it's primarily a MEspace that you're after, you can make a fine little dome or even a MEbubble with struts under 2'.

Thanks folks. I will definately keep that info in mind, ManOWar -good ideas, and my own ideas are definately forming themselves into crappy sketches and models littering my house. Also been loitering at the hardware stores and construction sites, fixing to get a load of stuff to play with. Probably going with a mix of pvc and other materials. Summertime in the backyard building shit. Yeah! I'll post a pick for comments when I get something together. Ya'll have been a big help.

Verb,
This is what I am bringing and would solve IMO most of your needs for having you're own space while being very light:

http://www.eurekacamping.com/tunnel.asp

I will be building a wind/sun block structure (large silver tarp) that extends from the ground on the back side of the tent to 7 or 8 feet high on the front side using 2 or 3 pipes to hold it up and some rebar with guy lines. Keep it simple and strong. Have a great first burn!
