The band Cheap trick just had a major stage collapse due to wind. The whole band is o.k. but the video really makes you think about structure safety on the playa. I keep seeing people planning on building their first ever shade structure on the playa without even practicing at home once. Have your S together before you get out there.

Definitely a poignant reminder. The weather can be even more severe on the playa.

I'm planning on building my shade structure in my brother-in-law's backyard. He has about a acre of open land in an area where the nightly winds gust about 20mph. I'm going to leave it up there for a few weeks to see how it survives the breeze (and the horses)

Not to be redundant, but winds on the playa can gust well above 60mph.

Yeah, but I gotta test with what I have access too.

I figure if it stands up to a month of wind and curious horses, it'll do alright for 12 days on the playa
