What are you going to sleep on in your tent?
What is best to use to sleep on in your tent? I've heard that air mattresses can deflate in the heat?
Has anyone made a DIY version perhaps from foam sheets you can reupholster sofa's with?
Or tarps & duvets? I'd be interested in something different, and if from a thrift store; even better.
One year I took a couple of those self-inflating camping mats, but they weren't very comfy, even with two of them... perhaps I should eat more cake & add some more cushioning fat!

Re: What are you going to sleep on in your tent?
We have a self-inflating mattress, small queen size, it is high end. On top of that is a memory foam bed topper mattress (also a queen). Both are bulky to haul, and a pain to roll up, they have their own bags, and are not dusty at all because our tent has no vents and is used only for sleeping and fucking. No shoes allowed inside! We use flannel sheets and a light blanket, with a plush blanket for cool evenings. Very comfy. Cover everything with a throw or sheet when we aren't in bed.

Re: What are you going to sleep on in your tent?
I have used the self inflating mattresses for a few years now and they worked great. You will need them to be at least 24 inches wide, and make sure the valves are wet when you close them, or they will deflate from your weight on it. The thicker air mattresses tend to sag in the middle when you move in your sleep. These are much better.

Re: What are you going to sleep on in your tent?
I've got a 3" thick thermarest on a cot. Lots of storage space underneath, and super comfortable.
If you're not used to your proposed sleeping solution, I recommend you camp in your kitchen for a couple of nights (any hard floor will do).
once you've got that part figured out, Plug your computer into your stereo, turn the volume to maximum and have it play sound effects randomly for the next week.
If you use a cot in your tent, you may want to tape some sponges to the cot feet so as not to poke holes in your ground cloth. also, a deep rug inside the tent, no shoes in the tent, and I hang my shoes up (force of habit from living in areas with BIG GODDAMN SPIDERS).

We turn our shoes upside down outside the tent door, or stuff dirty socks down the throats of the boots to keep the insides of our shoes less dusty.Mr.Coffee wrote: also, a deep rug inside the tent, no shoes in the tent, and I hang my shoes up (force of habit from living in areas with BIG GODDAMN SPIDERS).

I have a cheap inflatable mattress and I put a futon matress on top of it. Then clean flannel sheets and a bunch of pillows. A comforter. Queen sized.
Re: What are you going to sleep on in your tent?
I used the dust as a substitute for foot powder. It didn't work so well... Sleeping on shoes also doesn't work very well, although it wasn't from the Burning Man camping trip that I learned that one.

This made me smile. From the mouths of newbies.
There is nothing on the playa that will remain dust free, especially when camping with a tent.

Thermarest inflatable camping pad. Nothing special, but it feels good when I'm tired which is the best time to sleep. I'll probably still use a tent inside the carport shade structure if only just to prevent the pad and bedding from flying away.

3" foam mattress pad. It's been my constant companion for 11 years. Air mattress failed my first year, got over it.
Bring good bedding and lots of layers. I use cotton sheets, a cotton afghan, a comforter, an acrylic blankie (like being under a plastic bag), and a huge over-sheet to keep the dirt off. Also feather pillows are the bomb, and the extra moop-check is worth it.
I can't sleep in sleeping bags. Too confining.

Re: What are you going to sleep on in your tent?
I'm planning to sleep on top of a different person every night until I find the most comfortable one. Not too hard, not too soft, just right. I plan to pound my stake in deep so I don't roll off in the middle of the night, er, morning. Pigtails and large chest bumpers for pillows are a definite plus...

I'm fond of the folding foam mattress like this. (no endorsement of this particular vendor, I just now found them online. I think I got mine at target or someplace.)
Inflatables always sag, in my experience. thermarest etc too thin for my old bones.
