Hexayurt Door Designs?

Post by gabrielo277 » Wed Jul 31, 2013 10:53 am

Hey, I've searched most of this forum, read all of Appropedia's Hexayurt site multiple times and searched the entire inter web and haven't found a great solution to the door that can be locked (and stays shut). Does anyone have a sketch of a good locking door design?

Background: I'm just finishing up on an H18 10foot high (at peak) Hexayurt with 6 foot walls. It's basically an H13 design but the walls are 6 foot high instead, (formed by using two 4x8 panels tilted vertically to form what would be in the H13 style each wall panel. Then I chopped off the top 2 feet to make it 6 feet high It's completely accordion folded in the Camp Danger style. (but hopefully all this is irrelevant to my question).

What I know and plan on doing already (in an effort to save anyone from RE-explaining) :

Cut the door leaving room on the bottom, cut at 45 degree angle so it swings outward, don't cut all the way to the ground or the ceiling, leave a kick-board to retain structural integrity, reinforce the kick-board with 2"x4" on either side so its not destroyed in the first day. Simple tape loop handle that allows the yurt to still fold and transport flat. Tape Hinges. Add a plexi plate (6"x12") on the inside, and a 8"x12" plate on the outside and bolt them to each other. Was planning on giving the outside plate a 2" overhang across the door ledge and taping magnets on the that, and the ledge to hold the door shut.

What I don't know and am trying to figure out:
How can I make a mechanism that can lock the door from the inside and outside (yet doesn't take a carpentry genius and 2 days to build)? I would guess I could put a padlock system from the two plexiglass plates, which would be fine for locking on the outside when I'm away. But cuirous what a good way on the indie is. I've read some people suggest using a small wooden dowel through the door that rotates with a piece of wood, almost like a paint stir stick and rotating that to hold the door shut.
Wondering:
1. Does Anyone had plans or a drawing or parts list they would share for a door design, so i can cut down on the trial and error and trips to home depot).
2. Anyone has come up with a better secure system?

LASTLY: I have seen all the material here http://www.appropedia.org/Hexayurt_playa#Doors, just curious if anyone has specific instructions as good as the ones i've found for the general Hexayurt building and taping.

Many thanks and sorry for the long winded lead up, just wanted to be clear about what I'm asking.

For our hexayurt we went with a simple gate latch. Used long bolts and washer to secure it to the door and wall. I ran a yoyo string through to the inside so we could still get out.

On the the burn nights we locked the exterior with a combination lock.

Cool. Thanks so much, I guess sometimes the simplest idea might be best.
