10x10' EMT shade - can I cover 2 sides?

Post by dbkcarter » Sat Aug 10, 2013 4:20 pm

Hi all,

I'm making a standard 10' cube shade structure out of EMT and fittings with 90% shade material on top.

In an effort to sleep in this year, I'd like to also cover 2 sides of this structure with shade material. I have a few questions I would appreciate some opinions on:

Will this vertical wall of shade material be too sketchy in the wind?

Do i need to use more porous shade material (such as 70%)?

Would I be able to take the side shade material down at a 45 degree angle (to create more floor space) and secure it with rebar to the ground?

Thanks in advance.

Size of the conduit will determine what will survive the winds.

Please state that and perhaps you will get some opinions.

On a 10' span I'd go 1" minimum on the conduit for vertical sails like that.

I personally use 1 1/4 " schedule 40 aluminum pipe in a tensile structure. Worked dandy for 8 years.

I'd just angle it at 45 degrees on all four sides if you can, then you'll have a nice wind break too.

Thanks for the replies!

I'm using 1" EMT set on rebar stakes (EMT will be a sheath to the rebar), 2 guy-lines off each corner to rebar at least 12" in the ground. I'm thinking 45 deg angle on east and west most facing walls with shade cloth. On those walls I was thinking bungies to attach to structure and rebar (?) where they meet the ground.

Does this sound secure?

For the poles, if you put the rebar next to the pole instead of inside of it, you can duct tape it to add additional strength. Other than that it sounds great. FYI if you're looking for shade for your tent you might want to add a "south" side, as the sun will be shining from the south somewhat, not directly overhead.
