Knots! Show me your Knots!

Postby spacetime » Fri Aug 22, 2014 10:17 am

I've camped and I've sailed, and I've learned many a knot and forgotten them!

BM has forced me to get serious about knots again, (in part thanks to urging in these forums).

Right now, I'm pretty into the Bowline and the Power Cinch knots.

What are your favorite knots!? Show me your knots!

I like the improved clinch, the bloodknot/bloodline, and of course the square knot, and a basic slip. That's about all I use and they get me around well enough. I'll have to check out this pdf though, looks interesting.

The taut-line hitch. My entire camp is held down by this knot. It's also great for securing loads on your vehicle.

For my version of the monkey hut, I use a form of the Icicle Hitch to connect the top of one rebar stake through the rib to the top of the other rebar stake (I say "form" because over time I've changed it up some and have started to do something between an Icicle and a Klemheist http://www.animatedknots.com/klemheist/). As a bonus, the same hitch can be used to extract the rebar when you're ready to pack up and leave:

For my inline loop needs, my absolute go-to performer is the Directional Figure 8. It's fast, its secure and its easy to untie. Whenever I'm doing some trucker-hitch type of mechanical advantage setup, this is the inline loop that I use:

Lately, I've stopped using the taut-line in favor of a simple Prusik (taut line is essentially half of a prusik anyway). I found that every so often a taut-line hitch fails me where so far a Prusik has not, yet, so far (Animated shows it being tied using a separate loop being attached to a line, but I usually tie it with the end and tie it to itself in the same scenarios that I might also use a taut-line hitch):

Where's Knotjim? He gave me the most precious necklace. Personally knotted around a marble marble. That man knows knots.

This is my favorite knot algorithm. It's easy to learn and the knot is super useful. I use it all the time to lash stuff down tight with a trucker's hitch. With reasonable quality rope, this rope has never jammed on me.

YouTube -- Lineman's Hitch

I prefer rope, but it's expensive. My new shade structure has ~750' of cross braces. Steel wire is $0.08/foot, and even with thimbles and carbiners the total is less than $150. Few people are confident with knots, and so in the past all the guy lines were delegated to one or two people in camp. Carabiners are easier for everyone to use.
