Jeffery,

Please excuse the Captain. He was just pulling your leg.

You asked about basics. The basics are to lay on the ground and pull a tarp over you.

Just beware of mesh. Most of the cheaper colemans have huge areas of unclosable mesh. I'm sure that's perfect for anyplace but the playa.

Kodiak tents are playa proven (I love mine) but not cheap. They will however stand up to years of hard use.

What's important to you? If you want a long term playa proven solution get the Kodiak. If you're OK with one-and-done and probable catastrophic failure, go cheap.

Get something you can stand up in. Tent should be thoroughly staked and guyed down...10" aluminum spikes/nails are fine. Hard to find, but minimal mesh (I stitched blanket pieces over my mesh).

Dial up a little radical self reliance - spend a few minutes perusing the various tent threads on this board. It's been covered pretty extensively, and shouldn't take you very long to be able to make your own informed decision.
