Advice needed on 2 man tent for 1st time burner

Post by Donks » Fri Jul 31, 2015 5:11 am

Hey fellow burners..... Its my virgin burn this year and I'm currently looking for a 2 man tent to be my home for the week.... I'm going with a group who have a sheltered patch so this isn't an issue but I wondered if anyone had any advice on cheap tents ideal for BM.... I'd ideally like to buy online and get it sent to a friends address in the US..... Your help as always will be gratefully appreciated... Oh and I'd definitely prefer a little height to the tent if possible as the old back isn't what it used to be!!!!! Thank you in advance everyone xxx

My advice?: A two man tent is big enough for 1: 5 year old. I would (and did) buy a 4 man for one person. Buy something that has no mesh or windows.
Lots of good advice on these threads:

Bad backs and two man tents are not compatible.

2 people = an 8 person tent minimum.
1 person = a 4 person tent minimum.
I am waiting for my $150 8 by 10 with 6 foot headway to arrive.

"Cheap" and "ideal" are probably mutually exclusive. You get to decides where and how to compromise.

An instant 4-man tent, staked down well and situated within a windbreak, is in the $50 range and pretty ideal for one person plus stuff (if they use their car for some storage). Packs down to nothing. It's what I'm using if I don't fix my trailer in time to drag along the hexayurt.

Best to have something you can stand up in...it's a bitch changing clothes laying down and if you're doing costumes you'll change 2-3 times a day. It's hard finding a tent w/o mesh in the lower price ranges. Most of us modify by stitching blanket sections cut to fit the mesh windows. Without this the playa dust will gently sift like falling snow over you and everything inside your tent.
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

I'm by myself in a 6 man tent. 2 man tents fit 2 small men as close as possible with no stuff. My 6 man fits me my stuff and room in the middle to stand. You'll want at least a 4 man but you don't see many 4-man's that are tall enough to stand.
The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Yeah well you don't have to change clothes inside your tent, geez, your neighbors are naked so take some space outside. 8) 8) 8)

I use bungee cords to stretch fleece throws across my tent mesh, works great, no sewing, shark-bites for the fleece and an assortment of bungees are all you need to make a cheap tent work for you. But DON'T FORGET TO SERIOUSLY ANCHOR YOUR TENT, hahahahahaha, I watched a woman chase a tent up 6:30 Street last year and just laughed.

Serious tent-stakage sold separately, no shit. Need to get at least 12 inches below the surface even for a teeny bivy tent.

If they can't give you 7 feet by 9 feet for a tent, you should be someplace else. There is simply no room for your gear, and you will require even more space on the outside of the tent. A tent the size of a coffin is a bad thing.

I recommend the Coleman 2-person Sundome Tent. It is ~$44.99 at Target, Walmart and Amazon. It is available via prime from Amazon. Besides my personal endorsement, it has 4.5 stars on over 2k reviews on amazon.

I used this tent last year on my solo week long. It held me and all my stuff that needed to be inside. It is a solid quality, holding well through the tough early weather last year.

People are reasonably concerned you won't have space for stuff. However, if you are minimalist this size tent can work for you.

It can get messy, because when it starts to get dark and you're looking through your stuff for that one thing, it gets out of whack. If you reorganize each day, there is enough room for just you and your stuff.

Note, this tent does need to have at least the two sides with mesh-only covered in fabric which is then duct-tape sealed. It is probably not high enough to stand in, and you probably will not find a 2 person tent that is. I highly recommend fully unpacking and setting up the tent in advance. This will reduce packaging and potential moop out there. (You'll need to in order to apply fabric + duct tape anyway)

You must also look at additional, better stakes than those provided by this tent. The included stakes were not designed for high wind.

I also recommend getting a tarp to put under the tent so you are not instantly on playa when you step out or lounge near the tent.
