Hexayurt 3D-Printed Wall Brackets

Post by jasonwentcrazy » Mon Aug 10, 2015 3:05 am

Last year my terrific friend made these 3D-Printed brackets to make hexayurt assembly a whole lot easier.

It's ideal to have a few people help assemble your hexayurt but using these brackets allows the wall panels to be held in place without requiring the additional hands you'd otherwise need. You can at least get the walls in place all by yourself and they are solid enough to hold the walls in place while you get the roof in place.

These particular brackets were/are for the 2" RF boards but it's a cinch to make another version for the 1" variety. I'll remind him to get the files uploaded to Thingiverse as we planned and until then are if you are interested in them lemme know. [I'll try to make sure to add a note here once the files are uploaded to Thingiverse.]

In the grand tradition of looking at something awesome and then saying how it could be better, adding a web across the outside free corners would make the joint MUCH stronger :)

As a yurt girl,Ive gotta say those are "AMAZING"

My daughter and I usually just prop up coolers next to the walls as we assemble...
Oh my god, it's HUGE!

Coolers, tables, anything we can find if it's breezy. Though I have no doubt they would hold up the walls on a calm day, but I can't imaging the boards not tipping over if it got breezy.

yeah, but would you even attempt to put up your yurt during breezy time?

We're going with 6 ft walls this year. Was going to go with the one that has a weird door entry and 4 ft walls but that looked to complicated so 6ft walls all around!

Depends on how long it stays breezy. We've waited up until late in the night for calm. Now with the new taping method, (new to us, first time this year doing it) it looks like it will make it easier for the walls to stay up on their own, and it will make the roof even easier to assemble. There are actually only 4 sections--two for the roof, two for the walls. (not counting the 4 foot extension.)

We have a 6 foot yurt too. We can actually put it up with just two of us if necessary. We assemble the 4' walls, then set-up the 2' extension walls and attach the roof to those first. Then move that whole structure to the top of the four foot walls.

Is the Camp Danger taping method new? I didn't know anyone brought individual triangles to the playa anymore.

That makes it too hard to transport. If you keep them separate, they still fit in the 4' x 8' package.

If you split the wall into three sections instead of two, you can tight-hinge the 2' extensions in such a way that they largely dovetail together back into a solid stack. You might need to leave off one 2' section and use it to fill in the half-sheet left over at the top.

True but we rent a box truck so we're ok. Good to know though

The webbing is a terrific idea!

Last year was his first time even going to Burning Man. So the night before as he lay in bed not sleeping he was running through the preparation and the idea for these came to him. So he got up and banged them out. [I'm never not reminding myself I'm seriously lucky to have friends like that.] He mainly was trying to tackle the issue of how he might be able to set his own hexayurt up by himself or with just one other friend. And, yup, they worked like a champ in that sense.

Last year marked my first time back to the playa in a decade. Before that I went every year from 1998 on. Hexayurts were something totally new to me and of the many things that had changed about Burning Man they were/are one of the most incredible as far as I'm concerned. I was officially obsessed in less than an instant.

I'm doing Early Arrival this year and will be working for Playa Info. Ryan is volunteering with them too and we'll also have extra brackets. I'll see about getting the web idea added to them.

[EDIT: Although Ryan suggested they are very strong as they are. And that the open V corner doubles as a very handy rope guide.]

If you were interested in using them then I'd be happy to see about getting a set to you. Will you be out on the playa this year? I'll be there for sure and am doing Early Arrival working for Playa Info. I can maybe bring an extra set for you?
