Monkey Hut Material

Post by emjohnson33963 » Fri May 13, 2016 10:44 pm

Hello!

It will be my fifth year this year (miraculously got my ticket!) and I'm bringing a virgin ( ). I want to make his experience magical, and I'm thinking of upgrading my shade structure. I usually do tarps over metal fence posts, but this system never fails to disappoint. I want to do a monkey hut. I have to buy new tarps every year because the wind just destroys them by the end. So...

How effective would a monkey hut be with another material for the covering? I'm thinking some sort of lightweight cloth (sheets, tapestries, etc.). My biggest concerns are: will it keep the inside as cool as tarps and will it hold out much dust.

I have had success in the past with using tapestries as part of my structure, and they held up in the wind great, but it was mostly to replace tarps after they broke. So it was hard to tell if I was still hot and dusty simply because my structure sucked, or because cloth isn't very effective.

Thank you!

It sort of depends on what you are trying to do. Consider radiant attic foil. Its light, tough as nails and reflect 97% of the radiant heat that hits it. You have to do some pre-playa work to tape the strips together but it comes in 60' foot rolls.

Most tarp failure is due to flapping.

A well tensioned tarp using ALL the grommets is unlikely to fail.

This applies to silver tarps and NOT to cheap blue tarps.

Blue tarps are pointless!!!
