Flat Roof Tarp Stretch.....

Post by EGAZ » Tue May 24, 2016 12:36 pm

I am test building my flat roof tarp, 10 x 20. I bought the the white version from YSBW. and have the 9" bungees.

For those who have used these on the playa, How much do they stretch after a week in the wind?

Just want to make sure I have the right length bungees....

My bungees have stretched over the years (monkey hut). I tie em in a knot to take up the slack
Oh my god, it's HUGE!

I've had good batches and piss poor ones too. You must try the bungees in person. The ones that are tight and offer great resistance (thicker) are to good ones, I've had the good batch for 7+ years and they haven't broke or stretched. I bought a few more bundles about three years ago for additional shade, after the first use half of them were shot. I used some of the weaker batch last year and probably 30% of them snapped with those high winds. It worked out like a safety pressure release, where none of my shade tarps or framework ended up ripping or being bent. They just broke as the wind pressure dictated. Less to take down afterwards too.

Sorry I guess I worded that wrong. My question was how much the tarp stretches......

Minimal if at all, but the EMT will tend to bow inward. I use 3/4", it may not happen with 1" and above.

BTW, I don't think that those white on both sides tarps are opaque. It may offer the greenhouse effect...

True, not completely opaque. Thought I would give it a try. I'm not hanging any walls so it should be airy..... See how it darkens up once playa dust dirties it up. It should be a bit brighter at night once I sting my LEDs. Using 1" EMT.

thanks JA

Yeah tarps don't really stretch much. The only ones that I've seen stretch were canvas ones.

I find they stretch a little, but not much. I think you will find that the white tarps let in significantly more radiant heat than the silver ones.

Turn back before it's too late... You'll cook under those tarps.

I'm sure someone on here has a story about those tarps.

I have been using a 3/4 emt frame flat top with silver/brown tarps and 6 inch bungee balls. Have both 8x10 and 10x10 sizes. Last year I tried a white one and I like the silver because: it is heavier mil and the dark side down is easier on the eyes. The white one is bright. Neither stretches much.

Love my flat tops!

Well damn.... I went with white kinda on Trilobyte's comment awhile back that he was going to give it a try this year. And it looks a bit better than the usual silver or black. With red bungees to accent..... 8) (I know it will all be grey at the end but the first pics would be cool) Not sure I can return it now its been unpackaged.

When I look at the zoom map I see a number of white coverings. Though some may be canvas and other materials.

So lets hear from those that have tried white tarps. (Luigi has weighed in) Mill thickness aside, what say you?

Completely unbearable?
Tolerable?
Fuck it, just go with it?

Keep in mind I live in AZ so I am very used to desert heat.... spend a lot of time on the sand in Glamis....

I see a lot about "bungee balls". This is my first year and I am only doing a solo camp with a 10 x 10 1inch EMT cube. I am wondering if I will be able to get by using regular bungee cords with a hook at each end? Doing a silver tarp on top and maybe one side tarp angled on the sunrise side. Might buy some rope and do that dynamic rigging idea. More than excited.

"If" the hooked bungees are the correct length they should work. But they would need to be fairly short. :?

Suggest you take some ball bungies "just in case".

While new ideas are always welcome and are constantly being tested, its a good idea to look at what the multi-year burners are using and let this be your guide. If something is found that works better, it generally goes viral within the community almost overnight (lags come to mind).

You always want to bring enough of the "established" gear to fall back on if the non-common approach proves to be a no-go.

Ordered the bungee balls off Amazon today. They'll be here in 2 days. I keep buying stuff. This Burning Man gets expensive :D
