SquareYurt
Has anyone tried a 4 sided Insulation "Yurt"
Quick brain scan reveals 8(ea) 4' x 8' panels would do the trick. I know about the structural stability of a "hex" but why not a square, I mean they don't build hex houses?
I looked on Uncle Goog and saw PlayaPods or something, but I think one could make a fairly easy foldable square yurt.
An idea for wind loading and such would be to put a corner into the path of the wind. With a bit thicker insul and some good lags, I bet it could work?
Any Ideas? Thoughts?

Re: SquareYurt
A quick image search for "Hexayurt" on Google will pull up Yurts in all shapes and forms, including square. I've seen lots of those better ways to build a mousetrap designs, but after seeing most of them on the playa, it's only convinced me to stay with the original design. YMMV

Re: SquareYurt
my son built a 4 sided yurt one year. the roof of course is steeper but other than that it worked fine with no issues
Oh my god, it's HUGE!

Re: SquareYurt
You are assuming that you can predict that the wind will be coming from the same direction every moment after you have set up the 4 sided yurt. In this you will undoubtedly be mistaken.

Re: SquareYurt
It ain't lovely.
But it would probably work. It's prismatic and would allow a tape ring, making it a yurt of sorts.
Here is a quick Onshape mockup in case someone wants to play with wall thickness etc.
https://cad.onshape.com/documents/b0d11 ... 61bfec8b55
I think it could be made semi-folding with two pairs of 4x8 panels with tight hinges, and two pairs of folding kites with two loose hinges and one tight hinge each (cut down the center of one of the roof triangles).
Biggest problem I see is that the tip of the roof is WAY up there. Will be hard to tape even when the roof prism is sitting on the ground.

Re: SquareYurt
And here is the elusive TriangleYurt. This is probably the most stable yurt design of all!
It has a lowly 27.7 square feet of floor space compared to the Hexayurt's 166 or even the SquareYurt's 64.
Here are some calculations for floor space:
H12 Hexayurt: 166ft2 @ 12 panels = 13.8 ft2 per panel
Pentayurt: 110ft2 @ 10 panels = 11.0ft2 per panel
Squareyurt: 64ft2 @ 8 panels = 8.0ft2 per panel
Stretch 6' Hexayurt: 70ft2 @ 7 panels = 10ft2 per panel
6' Hexayurt: 41ft2 @ 5 panels = 8.2ft2 per panel
Triyurt: 28ft2 @ 6 panels = 4.66ft2 per panel
2Dyurt: 0ft2 @ 2 panels = DIVIDE BY ZERO ERROR!!!
So I'd imagine the reason you don't see square yurts on the playa is mere economics: you can get more floor space for fewer panels with the stretch 6' yurt, and the classic H12 has a great space-to-total-panels ratio. You add 4 more panels (a 50% increase) and get 250% of the interior space.

Re: SquareYurt
And as I said a whole bunch of useful info for people who might want to build one as well as agreeing that it will work and going on to calculate the relative advantages of various yurt geometries

Re: SquareYurt
As an FYI, I have a H12 and have used it for years. Its awesome. But I take so much shit with me and it all goes in the yurt. All I was thinking was scaling it down, most of the tape fucking sucks ass right now and is dried up. So rather than re-tape it all, I could salvage roof triangles and at least 4 sides and build something different.
I have really contemplated just a 6' stretch as well, but the geometries are different, I could reuse 2 walls, but most of the others have holes in them for windows and such, which would be weird, maybe not, on the roof.
I don't know why I'm so against using my H12 this year, I usually have a table and a hammock and a air mattress and coolers and chairs and clothes and all kinds of shit in there. On one hand I want to keep the sleeping area small like a 6' stretch but then where do I put all of my shit? On the other hand the yurt maybe is just too much space.
Fuck, 1st world problems I guess....

Nice workup, I guess I didn't realize how freaking tall it'd be.
Thanks

Re: SquareYurt
What you actually want to do , MFOB, is take your existing H12 and then ALSO build a square yurt. Butt it up against one of the walls of your H12 and you have an outbuilding for more of your stuff. Or build two square yurts flanking the sides of your H12 and it'll become the foam fairytale castle you've always wanted.

Here's my important contribution: I think you should call this structure a "Squrt".
