i need help with my yurt

Post by k_thomas2 » Sun Jul 10, 2016 3:42 pm

hello
my name is koy and im camping with Kazbah.
we are at 10 and A, awesome deep house sound camp and im one of the bar managers.

im posting today bc i have a MASSIVE yurt.
its actually quite amazing! i got it off craigslist which may or may not have been a good idea as the guy hadnt actually erected it himself.
last year i built this thing with extraordinary difficulty as the dimensions of it are different then the norm.

4x7ft 8in

the walls stand 8ft tall!
the cone is like 12feet at least... (talk about high ceilings 8) )
its so tall we need like 8 people and ladders to top it/tape this beast.
we had to ghetto rig it last year and i cannot for the life of me figure out why the roof is too small for the walls/base.
do i need to shave some off the walls in length?
its a hexayurt so height is not the issue. the roof simply does not fit as its too small.
the walls length again are 7ft8in as are each of the triangle roof panels. they are the exact length but are somehow too small when made into the cone to cap and become a flush roof.

any ideas?
any info would be greatly appreciated and i woudnt ask unless i was in absolute need.

thanks
KT

There is lots of yurt info here. Read some of the threads that talk about building them. Maybe it's time to cut that one into a different configuration.

I'm not sure exactly what you have there, are you saying the width of the walls is 7' 8", and the height is 8'? If so, where does the 4 come into play? (is it a 4 sided square yurt?)

I suggest first you go out and carefully measure your dimensions again, especially making sure that you have identical measurements where the roof panels connect to the wall (7' 8"?) Measure each and every one, because if they all share the identical length, then it has to fit when assembled. In that case, if they didn't match up (roof is too small) then you likely used the wrong edge (had a wall panel turned sideways) during assembly which would lead to the base being slightly larger than the roof and therefore not matching up and also a weird horizontal gap where that wall was 4" shorter than its other 8' tall counterparts. (or likewise you somehow misassembled the roof) Check that all the walls were cut square and are identical to each other, and each of roof panels are identical as well.

..and yeah, a picture would help a lot, and as Ratty said, it might be time to cut it down into something more playa manageable.

It sounds like 2 panels taped together lengthwise make one 8x8 wall. I think...

YES exactly!
its TWO 4x7ft8in panels STACKED ON TOP OF EACHOTHER making the walls 8ft tall and the length of each wall 7ft8in.

again, the height is not the issue....
its the strange dimensions of this monster yurt the problem.
they are normally 4x8 panels.

i will find a pic and post it up when i get home as this is quite the amazing yurt! it also has a mural done by my best buddy who is a great local artist one side of the exterior wall making it visible to the public eye improving our camps image.
so thats why i need to sort this out.

suggestions?

Are the walls bowed out? Was the roof taped a little to close to itself (at the seams) so it's not as relaxed?

How much smaller is it?

I'm no yurt expert, but it appears to me that if you reduce the angle / height of the peak it will widen the diameter of the roof. That will take some careful calculations and have to be taken off each roof section equally though.

Cool, I can see why you wouldn't want to cut it down, thanks for the photo.

OK, wild guess here, but perhaps the yurt was built so that the wall seams are supposed to be horizontal, but your friend inadvertently created the artwork with the panel oriented the wrong way (sideways), so naturally, when you assembled it, you followed that cue and in fact, all of your wall panels ended up sideways. If those panels are 4' x 7' 8" therefore making 8' x 7'8" walls and were meant to be placed as 8' tall, but because of the art you naturally assembled it oriented 7' 8" tall, then you ended up having 8' wide walls instead which would therefore make the roof seem too small. (It was cut for 7' 8" wall lengths)

If that is the case, you can either display the art sideways, or you have a bit of trimming to do so the walls are all 7' 8" square which would then match the roof.

First step is to measure it again to confirm.
