I was told if I'm sleeping in a tent I need to get some aluminet to cover it, so I don't get baked out in the morning and have a chance of sleeping in the day.
Is this roughly what I'm looking for?

It's Aluminet I, 70%. Is this overkill? Could I get away with a lower percentage? Should I be getting a shade cloth from the home depot and calling that good?
It's covering a 14' x 10' spring bar tent.

Posting because I'm curious as to whether draping the aluminet does much more than a tarp or other "block" sort of material...

Aluminet is great, just make sure there's a 'breathing space' between it and the tent. 70% is not overkill, at all.

We had a structure with aluminet over white tarp, and it was not that effective. You really need to have breathing space under the aluminet. We have switched to attic foil radiant barrier, which we have found to be much more effective (and cheaper - but more work).

And yes, space between nylon tent and aluminet.
Best would be a staked out four poled suspension system, which would involve 8 guy ropes or, more complicated, a self standing and cross braced structure such as used for carports.
HOWEVER: I've seen several people use those foam spaghetti like pool toys, but they can slide out in wind storms.
Better might be to try the pipe insulation (grey/black) at Home Depot or Lowes. Where the pipe goes could have a rope inside instead of a pipe, (stake down the rope,,,12" nails would be great for that application) and perhaps the insulation tubes would stay in place during hellish winds.
Better order NOW,,,check their pre-grommeted pieces, but you may have to buy bulk.

Draping anything over a tent, be it with or without a space-gap:
Unless it is 100% opaque, will do little to keep the tent cool.
A full blown Costco Carport with sides installed and maybe some dark tarp added - Awesome! Works Great!
Plywood Box - Awesomer! Bees-Kneez
Anything less than 100% light blocking will only slow down the process of the tent becoming an oven.
How much time do you gain?: Not much really; 20 minutes? 1/2 hour? 1 hour at best. Depends on material and if you have 100% of your tent in the shade.
It is allot better to put the tent on the West side of a large vehicle, strategically parked to block the morning sun.
