Will a 1/2 in. x 10 in. Galvanized Hex Lag Screw hold down a Kodiak Canvas Flex-Bow 4-Person Canvas Tent, Deluxe?

Re: 10 in Lag Screws
It will probably work, but longer screws might be better.

Worst case, bring 4 two foot lengths of rebar and a hammer.
Always good to have plan B.

Re: 10 in Lag Screws
I've been using the same stakes that came with my Springbar for twelve years. You'll be fine.

Thank you for your answers and good ideas.
Re: 10 in Lag Screws
I’ve heard that 3/8”x8” long lags are adequate for holding down a tent & 3/8”x12” long are ideal for a 10’x20’ canopy. I wish I had the energy to test some varying lag bolts on the playa but I don’t. Eventually someone will perform some type of tests so that ppl aren’t buying 14” long lags when they may only need 8”.
Re: 10 in Lag Screws
Depends on the year: wind, & soil conditions.
The issues isn't what wind load a given length will hold, but what conditions cycled the playa surface through the seasons on the way to the next Burning Man. The upper surface may be so soft that it won't hold dick, until after 12" or 14" down, so recent advice was to use your hand to scrape the softest top ~two inches or so away before screwing down. You'll see that a number of people that used 14" have gone to 16". Other years, smaller shelters will get away with 8" tent pegs.
Typical winds regularly up to 35 mph, sometimes 75 mph, and can be over 100 mph. Your call. It's one thing to hear of, or see photos or video of a shelter playing tumbleweed through BRC, or flying up 40' in the air, and another to be one of those on the spot to see it come down on top of someone.

That's one word I regret googling during breakfast.

Video games are giving kids unrealistic expectations on how many swords they can carry.

, but don't harm the red dragon that frequents the area from time to time. He and I have an agreement.

All good advice.
Now, back to the OP question for a tent.
Put a few bins of clothing, one of them 2.5 gallon suitcases of water in each corner of the tent ...
... and you’re good!
Now go party your ass off !!!

Re: 10 in Lag Screws
I have the same Kodiak I have used for many years. I use 10-12" lag screws with washers and have never had a problem. The Kodiaks are pretty heavy on their own. The first year I even used the stakes that came with the tent.
Re: 10 in Lag Screws
I have the same setup as Johnny Utah and it works great but feels a bit like overkill, the 10" would probably be fine. As others have pointed out, the steel stakes that come with the Kodiak are also playa-proven. I use the lags only because we have the drivers all around our camp and it's easier than pounding in and removing the stakes.Johnny Utah wrote: ↑Mon Jul 30, 2018 2:42 pmI have the same Kodiak I have used for many years.
