Flooring Alternative

Post by cowgirl » Thu Aug 04, 2005 4:54 pm

Howdy e-playans,

Yet another question here:

Instead of forking out $200 for a giant crappy roll of linoleum, I'm trying to come up with another suggestion...

Needing a smooth surface to dance on in bare feet (therefore seamless as well)

Anybody out there have a suggestion for alternative materials?

Thanks!

How about billboard vinyl?
I just scored a free one that's 14'x48'.
Thats wider then a piece of linoleum and if you get one and cut it in half it would be 24'x24'.

How smooth? How big? I'm thinking about using canvas (damn the fire risk!).

It's not Uber-cheap, but how about those foam "jigsaw puzzle" flooring pieces, available in 4-packs from bigbox retailers? They're kind underfoot- I use them in my studio, and they've really helped the foot and back pain of standing (or dancing!) for long periods.

jigsaw?

can you dance barefoot and not get severe blisters from them? you used these in an actual dance studio?

the smoothness is key b/c a lot of the movements are pivots and swivels... heavy footwork...

I'm not sure about barefoot dancing, but I remember karate class and being barefoot on the gym floor caused blisters if you weren't used to it yet. We used to take first aid type tape and wrap the balls of our feet until we got some calluses going. Once you walked around a bit the tape wasn't so slippery.

blisters

yeah my feet are well caloused after years of dancing...

i'm not actually expecting everyone to take off their shoes, but some might want to... and the surface will be easier than playa to learn the moves.

heh. My fault for not clarifying....SCULPTURE studio! But I DO dance barefoot in there when there's not too many metal shavings and rivet stems on the floor! For "DANCING dancing" it might be a little restrictive.

i checked into your suggestion and it turns out it would cost more...

home despot has them in tiles - they are rubber pieces-, and also gymnastics supply places too...

at the end of the day, i think its linoleum or bust!

I'm thinking that if some people take off their shoes and some don't that the people who don't will be leaving playa dust around and the people who do take off their shoes will get playa foot from the dust.

playa foot

playa foot will happen anyway if you take your shoes off... not immediately, but knowing to take care of your feet is a good thing.

it'll be a LOT better than dancing barefoot on the open playa... thats just silly.

If you decide to use linoleum or vinyl flooring, you might want to punch holes in the corners (reinforced against tearout) so that they can be staked out or stretched with ropes. Getting a rolled-up tube of flooring to play flat can be a real arsepain, although the playa heat will relax it some.
