where's the cheap fake lawn?

Post by gawul » Thu Aug 11, 2005 11:37 am

we use fake lawn for our flooring in camp. this year we have the opportunity to double our shaded area ( to 20x20) and need to get more fake lawn.

in the past i've bought it at home depot (twice) and it was pretty inexpensive

this week i went to home depot and lowe's and found that a 12x20 ft piece will be about 100$

thats FAR more than i have paid in the past. i dont really have the extra cash for that. i mean, if i have to i will, but i'd rather find it cheaper. would consider used stuff too.

anyone know a good place to find this stuff? i'm in roseville, which is outside of sacramento

Have you considered looking into seagrass mats? They are going to cost a little more than the astroturf, but come with the benefit of being able to re-use them for a very, very, very long time. They seem to be the one material that I've found that does not retain playa dust very well and they are super durable. When you get them home you just hose them off and they look like new. You might recoup your cost vs. astroturf in just one or two burns.

Not sure if it's the same thing but I just priced astroturf at Home Depot, a 12'x20' section...

Green: $.67/square foot
Blue: $.44/square foot

I ended-up buying two 8x6 "industrial strength" rugs for $19.99 each (to go with my other old 7x10 rug which will cover my 10x20 space).

One reason I didn't get the astroturf is because of the moop factor. That stuff comes un-hemmed and it was mooping in the store even before moving it, wind, and people walking on it. I also figured I could wash the rugs and use them at home when not on the Playa.

I agree on the mooping factor. I bought a roll of the astro-turf and it has mooped all over me. I am going to be taping the edges to hopefully de-moopify this.

thats weird, ours has never unraveled. i guess i'll end up getting more of the same, altho i saw some 9x12 green lightweight rugs for 40, so 80 for two.

seagrass is a great idea, maybe next year, as this years budget is, well, over

did you find yours at cost plus?

Tip about Turf

I agree that astroturf is moop hell and have stopped using it, but if you're planning on using it, try fusing the edges with something like a small propane torch, works great.

Wouldn't that produce yucky burnt gasious vapors? I have artificial strings for my beads and I hate breathing that stuff when I fuse the ends with a bic...

toxic fumes

Post by Jp » Fri Aug 12, 2005 1:38 pm

A little bit, I did it outdoors and it didn't bother me. You don't need to really burn it, just get it hot enough to fuse together. I'm sure it is highly toxic, probably took a few years off my life, so it goes.
