It's hard for me to understand why a person would spent so much time and money..Then miss the whole thing behind there addiction..
You can stay home and get stoned and make useless phone called..
I have often wounder how important some one think they are do one thing and talking on the phone too
My kids worry about me.. So they gave me a phone.. when I'm away from home ie BM.. I turn it on once a day just to please the kids..
I don't ansewer it if i'm doing some thing else.. Leave a message..

This is my first year at Burning Man. A big part of the draw for me is the lack of contact of the outside world and OMG!!!, actually having to make a personal contact with your neighbors, people walking down the street etc... Please don't tell me it's going to be this way??DrPeffer wrote: But woe are we if, from now on, one comes to The Burn to find everyone with a piece of metal pressed against their head, chatting about how "We're at 4:00 and B. Where are you guys? Oh yeah? How is it over there? Should we come? Duuuude! You gotta see this guy spinning in front of me here!"

YES. I will do it with you. Love it. All day, wander around. "You gonna eat that?" when people are making dinner.Boijoy wrote:ok, THIS is going to be my performance piece this year..

It'd be even funnier if there really was no cell service!

"This year the Burning Man organization is assisting with the launch of an API. With the API you get access to descriptions and locations of the Streets, Art, Camps and Events. When combined with a map this is everything you need for a local city guide. And that is exactly what the iPhone app does (it's not available in the app store; if you want it head to the Burning Man Earth Camp next to Media Mecca -- be nice). It maps all of those entities, will geolocate you and let you mark favorites (see the screenshot from my iPhone)."
wow, i guess i am very lucky to have gone last year cause it sounds like BM will never be the same again. since the coverage is limited it sounds like we're safe for this year (are we???) but it begs the question: where is this leading?
will people be connecting to the outside world instead of engaging in the community directly around them? is being on an iPhone at BM any different than seeing a person writing in a journal or talking loudly and obnoxiously with their camp mates? is the experience of being separated from the outside world any more rewarding or meaningful?
hmmm...

cellphones at burning man = evolution
I'm sure the majority of fish in the ocean made fun of the first fish to leave the water and venture out on land...they probably got together in schools and complained bitterly, but the fish that got out of the ocean had the last laugh!
Their decedents are going to burning man this year and are gonna use cellphones while eating canned sardines!...

I know for a fact that you get 5 bars on ATT and you can also use the internet on your cel. You probably should be able to text too.
I also doubt that they only have 26 lines or whatever available. Their equipment is made to handle hundreds of lines per node. i'm not a tech, but setting up hardware that can only do 26 lines doesn't make any sense.
Burning man takes you back decades, back to a time when you went out with who you were with, and you made friends with the people around you because you had no way to coalesce your social safety net around you.
it is very likely you are going to see a few yahoos yapping away while trying to connect with friends that are elsewhere on the playa. a LOT of the BM experience would be lost if this happened. we will see, maybe BRC has had it season...
