GPS position logger

Post by phil » Fri Aug 04, 2006 2:18 pm

Steve Roberts has put together a waterproof package from Sparkfun Electronics and SealLine to log his wanderings in a sea kayak. See his blog at http://www.nomadness.com/blog/2006/04/g ... ogger.html for photos and a description. Note that this is a GPS data logger only. It does not transmit your location, only records it each second. The information is saved to an SD card in a KML file, useable by Google Earth. The package is powered by a button battery on the processor board and four AAs in a separate pack.

The datalogger is located at http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc ... cts_id=671 According to Spark Fun, a 256MB SD card (included) will accumulate 440 hours of data. I calculate that to be eighteen and a third days. I do not know how long the AAs will last, though.

http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/store ... d=17914880 for all SealLine electronic cases. This particular page is to order the extra small case, but look to the right of your browser window for the rest of the case sizes. The large case is 7.5 inches wide and 13.5 inches high. Each case comes with a foam insert for cushioning and to provide flotation, which we don't care about on the playa.

I'm not sure how to identify where all those fascinating art objects are on the playa, though. I can download the file to my Mac, but then I have to go through by hand and figure out where stuff was. Any ideas on a better way?

Well, it's not marketing, and it's for geeks! Geekier people than I.
