Battery Powered Audio - Crate Taxi or Pignose Hog ?

Post by BenWillett » Tue Jul 31, 2007 8:41 pm

I'm also looking into cheap, easy sound for the playa. In addition to the car audio gear that's being talked about, has anyone tried these little (15 - 30 watt) battery powered amps ? They're basically self-contained units with battery, amp and speaker in an enclosure for around $100 used. I wanna use it while we're chilling around camp- I'm not gonna try and drive a camp like the DEEP END or DISORIENT off of this. ;)
Is 15 - 30 watts gonna be loud enough ? Is the car audio just as easy ? just as loud ?

Those are probably fine, I know somebody who brings something that looks like the Crate setup to spin jams and it's pretty good. The only problem is that it's an enclosed system so there's no flexibility. For around the same price, you can get a portable amp, speakers and battery and build your own. The advantage of doing so is that if any component is having problems (if you don't take good care of the batteries, like letting the unit sit for months without charging it, or not recharging it immediately after draining it, your capacity will suffer horribly), it will be difficult to replace. You can also upgrade the components later if you want, rather than having to buy a whole new unit.

Yeah, I have a Pignose type battery guitar amp and considered trying to run my iPod through it, but I was concerned that the impedence (or some other electrical term over my head) would not match and something would get fried. Also, everything would be mono, which would suck.

Still wondering, however, if I had a big ole 12V deep cycle battery hooked up to a smallish car amplifier, hooked up to two moderate jam blaster speakers, how long could I play tunes without draining the battery?

anyone?
