Lycra PlayaProof Speaker Covers?

Post by augustIII » Wed Aug 15, 2007 5:22 am

Is there such a thing?

Plastic bags seem like they'd trap too much heat and I recently heard that some of the bigger sound systems use lycra to keep out the dust.

Any one have experience with Lycra or anything else that works well?

Come to terms and embrace the truth: Whatever you do to keep dust out of expensive gear is 100% absolutely futile.

The ONLY way to keep playa dust out of speakers: Don't bring them.

If you are bringing them anyway, just let go of the notion that they will EVER be playa free again.

Playa dust, for the most part, is harmless to electronics until you take the gear back to a place that has much moisture. Then it may be mildly corrosive, about as corrosive as soap is.

1. Accept that you gear may get damaged and require repair/replacement.
2. Don't worry about it and have a good time.
3. When you get back home, blow that gear out and take it to a shop for cleaning.

Yes absolutely agree with the above post, whatever you bring to the playa, just assume that it will be ruined by the time it gets back. That dust gets into everything no matter how careful you are.

To this day my van still blows a puff of playa dust into my face every time I turn on the air conditioning, and I never even brought it to the playa.

At night heat shouldn't be a problem.
I've heard of people using covers when speakers aren't in use.
You could heat sink them if you think it's a problem.
You can get a thermometer that registers highest temp from Taylor.
Or turn them down.

It would be a shame if I had to resort to self-deception to preserve my faith in objective reality.
