Guitar question

Post by scottwh » Mon Aug 23, 2010 4:49 pm

Hi,

I'm thinking of bringing my acoustic guitar along this year. It ain't nothing special, but was wondering if anyone has done this in the past and found that it was a very bad idea.

Just thought it would be good to have on hand, but I don't want the damn thing getting warped. Dust I expect, but a tweaked neck due to the heat I'm not keen on.

Any feedback would be most appreciated!

I bring an old but serviceable Oscar Schmidt acoustic guitar the last 3 years, no case, and it hasn't warped.

General Rule of Thumb: don't bring anything to the playa the loss, ruination, or destruction of which would ruin your trip.
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

Here is some info http://www.fretnotguitarrepair.com/care.htm Remember that along with the high temps the humidity can get down to single digits.
You know it's going to be a bad day when you jump out of bed and miss the floor.

Keep it in its case when not in use, in the shade. It'll be fine.

i remember people saying to make a humidifier for your guitar case.
you just wet a little bit of sponge and put it a plastic tube.

I brought a little travel guitar last year and it was grand, i didnt really do anything special. Wouldn't bring my main guitar though.
Catch the beats, embrace them and let them go!! )*(

Many thanks everyone for your comments (including "The Belushi").

Indeed, the best advice is not to bring anything whose loss would be less than cool.

Interesting page about how humidity/lack of humidity affects guitars. Common sense really, but I'm kind of stupid to begin with so I like reading that one!

By the way, if you hear someone noodling away (quite terribly) on a 6 string while you're up there and it sounds like a half-baked version of Billy Bragg mated with Husker Du, stop by and say hi, because that idiot will be me playing.

As per dragonpilot's direction - bring only a beater guitar, ie. one you don't mind losing when it comes down to it.

Come to Lost Penguin camp 4 & Esplanade btw as we have open stage, sing-a-longs and stuff you can join in on...

Live music on the playa is one of my best memories.

I won't embed them all because of the clamor, but see these as well:
violin
guitar
violin & tears
steel drums

I understand it damages the instruments (except maybe the steel drums), but the performances really knock me out - the steel drums, especially. That guy is good.

Anybody who wants play gets my vote.

Wowza! Many thanks for the invite.

Be careful with what you throw out there though as I'll probably take you up on this offer!

Hoo-boy, stardom awaits! Because, you know, what everyone LOVES to hear is some goofball raised on punk, but got a bit older and now thinks he can play an acoustic guitar.

EXTRA CRINGE BONUS: I also sing while playing.
