Re: HAM Radio
Sgt Pepper,
There is a daily net held on 2M every day at noon on the national calling frequency: 146.52. There is also some chatter on there throughout the day. There should be a ham meet & greet one day. Tune into the net to find out what day/time it will be set up.
If you want to play a little bit more, or get messages to the outside world, there are several repeaters nearby that have APRS and IRLP. They are on UHF and VHF. Check out: http://cq-blackrock.org/index.php for details. The club that maintains the repeaters is having a fundraising drive, so consider that as a possible gift.
As far as emergency communications within BRC, MURS is used as the local "911". The frequency is 154.600, CTCSS 97.4. If you have a MURS dedicated radio, this is channel 5, code 11. That should put you directly in touch with ESD Dispatch.
I have found that traffic control for entry and exodus is on UHF, but can't remember the exact frequency. There is a lot of chatter, so it is easy to find if you scan around a bit. It is a good way to find out exactly what is going on.
I'll be monitoring 146.52 while in line Mon morning. Pop on and give me a shout.

Re: HAM Radio
Oh, and I should add that the local UHF repeater also has 911 Phone Patch, in case you have an emergency off-playa and have no cell service.

Once again, if you use it, consider throwing them a few dollars. Their org provides a great service to the black rock desert year round.

Re: HAM Radio
Just as a follow up, several of the members of the Ham Club that maintain that tower have never been (and don't plan to go) to BM. They are ham enthusiasts who like to share.
I mention this because I personally feel it represents the event better when we make sure to thank people from the default world for their gifts.
It would be real cool if you could donate to them.

Re: HAM Radio
...and if you really want to geek out, check out the APRS logs:
http://aprs.fi/?addr=black%20rock%20cit ... range=3600
zoom in on BRC, and you will see that three hams running APRS are already on site.

Re: HAM Radio
Anybody have any plans to stream any of these channels on the net via a site like radioreference.com? I ask b/c I run this site: http://youarelistening.to and would love to put up a temporary page for something like youarelistening.to/brc for the week if possible. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks!!
